Brett Ratner directing Conan?

It just goes to show that the studio that owns the film rights to Conan isn't taking this property all that seriously.

We were just fortunate that the original Dino De Laurentis film came out so good -- inspite of it being a DINO DE LAURENTIS PRODUCTION! due to John Milius's excellent direction, Arnold's physical/charismatic presence, and the participation of James Earl Jones.

Son of a bitch. There were rumors some time back, but it was looking like he was going to pass on it.

Well, let's hope the script and cast are good, at least.

I liked After The Sunset. If he can accidentally not fuck up one movie, maybe it'll happen again. On the other hand, there's the entire rest of his IMDB resume...

Based on that same AICN article, the script is in good hands, at least.

Not to mention Basil Polidourus' exquisite score!

What are the best things in life, Brett Ratner?

Crush da fans' hopes!

Get them to see drivel at the theater!

Hear de lamentations of the geeks!

Why do people trash the Arnold version? It's bound to be better then this crappy Ratner movie will turn out.

From what I gather, it's not true to the original stories.

Well, not having read them, that aspect didn't bother me.

On one level, the first Arny Conan film was a collection of piss-poor performances by a cast that only had a few actual actors in it, and a plot that... ummm .... plot?

On another level, it was an utterly brilliant excercise in filmmaking (acting aside) - between Millius' direction, the beautiful cinematography, and Polidourus' astounding score, the film should be used as an example of how to do everything right (acting aside) to a film school class. The first ten minutes (the attack on the village) is probably the most utterly perfect piece of filmmaking I've ever seen.

The Aronold movie was dumb fun but nothing like the books really. What gave you the impression people trashed it though? It seems to be fondly remembered. Not a fan myself though.

I think the Arnie movie is dire. I like a lot of John Milius' work, even if I dislike his politics and I like a lot of Oliver Stone (co-writers)'s work. I like Arnie in the right movie, I like Jame Earl Jones and I like a good bit of fantasy and hack and slash. And I still think that Conan The Barbarian is a load of pompous, pointless pants. The Rat couldn't make a worse movie if he tried.

Actually, he probably could, but I'd still be surprised if he did.

:guffaw:

Seriously, while I am glad to see that this Conan film is not a simple remake of the 1982 classic film, I hope Ratner treats the subject matter with the gravitas it requires.
