News Brent Spiner Returned for "Picard" (and you could do the CGI better in 15 minutes, we get it)

I was expecting to hate the resurrection of Data, but they did it in a surprisingly deft way.

I stil consider the original TNG Data to have said his goodbyes in season one, but he also got a second chance as a different Data, combining the best of all of Soong's creations. So it's a new character, but different.

The various Soongs weren’t really working, and the Data we got back is not *quite* the original, more akin to a more rounded variation on Gen and emotion chip Data — without the retcons to that made in FC and INS. It works, especially when you think of Data being repeatedly made a prisoner and a tool, and now really is free, because he is back. They won’t keep trying to catch that lightning in a bottle.

Data 3 is close enough that I really don't agree with bringing him back. Death does not work that way in real life and resurrecting Data for a second time just undermines the emotional verisimilitude of the series.

Data looks so good in Season 3! Older, yes...but much more accurate then the de-aged version from Season 1. Even his hairline is perfect (it's a grey hairpiece, his real hair is thinner). :-)

I suspect it'll be voice only, as he can't realistically play a supposedly ageless android at the age of 70. If he was to appear, I think CBS would have to indulge in some digital de-ageing make-up of the sort employed on Samuel L. Jackson to play mid-'90s Nick Fury in Captain Marvel. While it's certainly possible, I doubt that even the most lavishly funded TV show could afford more than a cameo.

I guess you got that wrong 4 years ago. He can now. Lol

And that's the important part. They did not just resurrect Data, they turned him into a (synthetic) human. So he can finally be the person he always wanted to be.

And the transition hasn’t been entirely smooth. Which is also so fitting that they addressed Data with his own mental health challenges and isn’t just “yup I’m still perfect”

Dumb question that was bothering me. So, the body that Data is in now was originally built for Soong to utilize, similar to the body Picard is using. So why does it have the classic Data eyes?

He was meant to be an amalgamation of all the existent Soongs with an android interface

It isn't an exact golem like Picard's. Soong was using all his knowledge and past models to create a new synthetic human. It didn't work perfectly.

And remember that the human to synthetic conversion, per Discovery, was successful only once, which was Picard.

Soongs was only partly successful in that his memories came over but the only personalities present were already synthetic beings
