News Brent Spiner Returned for "Picard" (and you could do the CGI better in 15 minutes, we get it)

I dont know about CBS, but I looked at that and said "Wow, what weird new alien species is this?" If Dorn makes an appearance in ST:PIC, I hope he sees these clowns from DiscoTrek, and says "They ARE Klingons, but we do not discuss this with outsiders."

Hello dear people.

I see some worries about Brent Spiner make up to fit Data. As we all know biology is cruel. Brent Spiner is now an old man.

BUT look at your smartphones. It isn't metter is that a phone such as Huawei Y6 (200 dollars) or some premium thing like Samsung Galaxy S10+ or iPhone XS Max (1000+ dollars). You can simply use de-aged filters on apps like instagram, messenger, snapchat etc.

So imagine now what professionals can do with their resources, supported by big and rich studios such as CBS and their budgets (millions of dollars).

We already saw that CGI magic (Fast and Furious - Paul Walker ; Marvel movies etc). So don't worry about CBS bringing back Data. It won't be some hard or impossible work for them.

CGI de-aging can be done in 3 simple phases. Let's say it's gonna look like this when we talk about Brent Spiner / Data:

Convincing CGI de-aging for a HD production where the actor moves around and interacts with others is still - expensive - you need a film budget to do it for any period of time.

Stray thought: Maybe de-ageing Data is the reason they chose the high collar uniforms.
They de-aged Paul Reubens for the Netflix Pee-Wee Herman movie by just taping up his the back of his neck and then doing light CG work under his eyes. It wasn't perfect but it was practical and effective, and I think it would be fine for a stiff, upright character like Data.
-Especially if Data's hair comes down to meet the collar, I'd say they could definitely afford to do it.

Maybe in the years since Voyager returned, holograms with holo-emitters have become more commonplace. And post-Nemesis they had Data's program/consciousness/whatever put into a hologram. Then Brent Spiner can appear with no makeup or de-aging at all and they can just say that's how Data is choosing to look.

But you should be aware that Star Trek: Countdown comic is actually part of canon/prime-time. So Date is back (B4).

I’d be fine with recasting Data at this point. I’d also buy an in-universe explanation that Geordi or someone built a positronic brain sophisticated enough to unpack and run Data’s stored personality from the B4, essentially bringing him back to life.

CBS would have had plenty of money for that had they not wasted so much on Discovery bling bling pew pew.

Yeah, CBS should have slashed the budget for the big ticket flagship show for their fledgling streaming service to sink it into de-aging the actor behind a canonically dead character to engorge people's nostalgia boners. What were they thinking. :shifty:

Also, anybody else creeped out by the suggestion that Data's personality should subsume B-4's, just so he could return? Like, I feel this idea opens a big, ugly can of worms on the topic of the "worth" of individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities? B-4 may not have been the positronic masterpiece Data, Lore, and their mother were, but he's still his own person that shouldn't be reduced to basically a mobile spare part for his younger brother. Same goes for the suggestion from the page before that they could dump Data's data (hehe) into Lore's body. I don't think Data would appreciate to wake up uploaded into what would now essentially be his brother's corpse, no matter how estranged they were or how dangerous Lore is. Because that's what would happen, Lore would be gone for good, not merely put on hold.

You don't get it. It's about smart spending. They wasted money on Discovery. Every dollar they spent on it didn't make it to the screen. For instance, go read one of Anson Mount's interviews when he talks about how loooong it took to film every episode and how unusual (aka UNPROFESSIONAL that was), or how they had to fix the fact there was no ranking badges put on. Compare the bang for the buck of, let's say, Star Trek II, for comparison, with the heavy use of recycled assets from TMP. Did that in any way compromise the quality? Of course not. It's generally considered the best Trek film. Kurtzman and co. blew their budget on Discovery, didn't get the proper ROI, and now Picard is getting the scraps (after Stewart's big payday of course).

Please let poor Data rest in peace. They can always cast Spiner as another character, maybe a long-lost (human) member of the Soong family, or as a crazy Admiral, or a member of an alien species.

They could coexist like joined Trill - would certainly be a fresh approach for all involved ;)

Now let me stop you right there; why do you belittle the concept of nostalgia boners? This whole show is built around the concept of fan service. When was the last time, a 78 year old received top billing in a big budget us tv show? PatStew wouldnt be able to do this if it wasnt for us fanwankers...

The first Waypoint comic story had Geordi as captain of a future Enterprise with his crew made up of holographic duplicates of Data who had been uploaded into the ship's computer. I thought it was a really sweet idea.

One easy plot point to address Data "aging" - Data's "mother" was a more advanced model that was designed to replicate aging. At one point Data/B4 could upgrade himself to these advanced systems, in an effort to have more of the Human experience.
