Breen

Vastator

Lieutenant Commander

I have been wondering about the Breen more and more recently especially after the end of the Dominion War. What do we know? They are very mysterious and supposedly come from a frozen wasteland yet Weyoun said it was actually quite pleasant. We know the Klingons sent an expedition during the Second Empire (whenever that was) into their space which never returned. So they were strong enough to take on the Klingons at that time.

So what else? I checked Memory Beta about them and its been mentioned that they were considered a possible useful ally in the future against the Borg.

And Christoper, no more bad jokes :p just messing

They can look like whatever you want, since the producers had no intention of ever showing them out of their completely ripped-off Boushh costumes (which is what Rat Boy is quoting, if you didn't already know).

I always figured they were the suits, which is why no one's ever seen what was allegedly inside even if they steal their costumes.

On one hand, I don't think the Klingons are quite as tough as they would have you believe (Worf not withstanding).

On another hand if they live on a frozen wasteland, we know from whatever Voyager episode that was, that Klingons can't take the cold, really at all -- so that might be a possibility for what happened to them.

And of course almost anything at all could have happened to the Klingons be it Breen related or not at all. A decent story on this could be in order. ;)

Is this a theory that's gone around a lot? My friend told it to me...

The Breen wear those suits not for any actual environmental reasons- but because they don't want to be recognized, because they're Klingons. The Klingons that went on the Second Empire Expedition. I think his theory expanded to the Breen being other aliens as well (including humans) that joined the original Klingons.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about here?

Although the costume stealers *have* seen the Breen, so that really makes no sense.

Whatever the answer, the Breen really does seem like a topic that could use some TrekLit coverage, eh? Especially seeing what wonderful things have been done with the Andorians and the Tholians in the last while.

True, but there's still plenty to explore in those cultures, and I rather like having at least a few mysteries like the Breen remain mysterious.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Good point, Trent. But oh, my curiosity struggles with it. Especially knowing that there *are* characters like Kira that know at least part of the answer.

perhaps they're a race of snowmen, ugly bags of total water, they require the cold to maintain cohesion and, outside their native environment, without their magic hats they dissolve and evaporate away.

Well, recall that Weyoun hinted that the Breen homeworld wasn't cold at all but rather temperate. Another theory I had was that the suits were rigged with some kind of charge that vaporized the body in the event someone tried to forcibly remove the suit. Why they're paranoid enough to do that is open to interpretation.

Kira has to have seen a Breen, since she once stole one of their environmental suits.
Not necessarily, she could have found one in a locker room or whatever equivalent the Dominion have on their ships.

AFAIK, Kira specifically mentioned knocking a Breen out "cold" :D and stealing its suit.

Also, this did not happen on a ship, it was on a planet ("Indiscretion").
