Breaking: Ft. Hood Attack

It's inevitable that all religions develop this extremist component. There are a large number of people who are attracted to organized religion because they are crippled by insecurity and religion gives them a sense of identity; therefore they see anybody who chooses another religion or no religion as threatening their identity. Conflict ensues. This has been the story of Human history since the beginning, and it's something we need to outgrow to achieve true civilization.

Agreed. What people need to remember is that religion and spirituality isn't at the heart of it, human fear is what drives this level of extremism. Granted you see people in religions say this and that is morally bad and wrong, but the worst they do is try to have a TV show pulled from the air or things to that effect. The truly insecure and fanatical are the ones who accept that human lives need to be extinguished in order to further a cause.

Yes, there will always be those that feel they are missing something and feel alone. Usually you'll find them in cities or keg parties. ;)

And if the city or the keg party becomes a substitute for their sense of identity, they may be motivated to violence if they imagine it to be threatened; that doesn't happen anywhere near as often as it does with religion, though.

Or Fenway Park.

I sincerely doubt that considering Fenway Park has been filled to capacity for every game for something like five consecutive years - a record I believe. You're not going to find too many people who feel alone there. Nor missing anything for that matter. Why would anyone there feel lacking when their team has won two championships in the last 6 seasons? Especially considering that they did that with smart team-building strategy rather than just pulling out a huge checkbook and paying out nearly half a billion dollars for three players.

There's no honor in purchasing a championship - unless you are a Ferengi.

Oh, I dunno, getting utterly swept by the Angels in the '09 ALDS had to have hurt at least a tad. And why do you think they still bitch about "Bucky Fucking Dent" 30 years later? ;)

And enough of this "purchasing a championship" crap, ok? Any team with money is going to go after players. They have the *right* to do so. It's not purchasing anything but the contracts of those players. What happens after that is solely dependent on the talent of the team.

Yes, because bringing up a sports rivalry out of fucking nowhere is totally an appropriate turn of events for a thread discussing an awful tragedy.

I mean, fucking seriously? You had to make a Red Sox jab ... why?

Getting swept by the Angles isn't even a blip on the RADAR compared to sweeping the skanks after being down a 3-0 deficit to them. Bucky who?

You're right about the talent of the team after they have been assembled. The 2009 Yankee players were good and they earned their win. But that team was purchased. The management didn't utilize scouting talent, player-development skills or make savvy trades. They outright purchased a team. So go ahead and celebrate the fact that your team is richer than any other team. More power to you if that hollow fact gives you any pleasure.

The gunman was probably just nuts on his own. I don't see the need to drag conspiracy theories into this. Even his own imam said he was crazy, isn't that right?

All ideaologies develop extremist components. Dumping religion will bring mankind no closer to world peace than making everyone the same colour.

I didn't mean anything forced, LaserBeam brought up the Ursula LeGuin reference. But even if this was a religion free planet, it's likely this would have happened, since it seems to have roots in nationalism and racism as well.

Sure, incidents like this would happen; ideology encompasses all of those things. That's why Human culture has to outgrow it as part of a natural progression.
