There are reports of a shooting attack at Ft. Hood Army Base. Seven are dead, 12 wounded. One gunman is reported in custody. There is a search for another gunman.

Update: 3:51 pm --NPR's Mary Louise Kelly has these additional details --

Army Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Garver said the following:

While the situation is still developing, I can confirm a shooting at 2:30 Eastern, 1:30 local.

It took place in or near Howze Theatre, which is next door to the Folgers Readiness Processing Center.

We've seen the reports on at least 7 dead, 12 injured -- but CANNOT confirm that yet.

We expect a statement shortly from Fort Hood.

The installation is on lockdown.

The police are on the scene.

We've also seen the reports of multiple shooters, but CANNOT confirm that at this point.

MSNBC is reporting that officials have surrounded a PX. They are also reporting that the suspect has a high-powered sniper rifle.

The base's website says the base is on lock down. We'll report more details as we get them.

Apparently a graduation ceremony was in progress in the area of the shooting. This means civilians in the area in addition to normal post personnel.

I heard about this from my classmate who lives in Killeen and drives down to Austin for our acting class. If I hadn't heard about it from her, I'd worry if she was ok.

It's been all over the news here, as you can imagine. A law enforcement official identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan. It's even more horrible since it was apparently a soldier who did this.

Two of the wounded are in serious condition. I hope nobody else dies.

IF this guy was an infiltrator and not a nut job, then this has been in the works for a long time. One doesn't become a major overnight.

WHY on Earth would you assume it was an infiltration? Because of the shooter's ethnicity? Haven't we moved past that ignorant bull by now?

I see a couple of things being the cause of this. Bush's unending war, and the persistent refusal of the United States military to heed the pleas for help their soldiers make.

You don't get out of service until you're too sick (mentally or physically) for them to want to support you, or you go kamikaze like this guy. There are no mental health reprieves, even for psychiatrists, apparently.

Damn. Not to get too political, but this is why we need to be supporting our troops, not the war.

They need decent salaries, decent housing, mental health support and a well funded program to help military families that are left behind when soldiers are deployed.

And enough of this repeated deployment crap. A volunteer army does not mean that it's acceptable to treat them like meat and cannon fodder when the numbers get low.
