Bratz Dolls Banned by Federal Judge! YAAY!!!

I'm wracking my brain on this one. I've gone through every TOS race who appeared in later series I can think of. Vulcans, Romulans, Klingons, Tellarites, Andorians, Organians, Gorn, Tholians, Horta, the lot. All of them made appearances on Star Trek well within the 30 years mentioned.

The race in question is mentioned in the above.

That is all.

I'm puzzled. The Vulcans, Romulans, and Klingons have appeared through Star Trek's history. The Andorians appeared occasionally (though never prominently) until disappearing for awhile starting near the middle of The Next Generation, the Horta haven't been seen since the 60s, and the Tellarites, Gorn, Tholians, and Organians didn't reappear until more than 30 years after they first did.

There was going to be a Horta in TMP but they couldn't make one in time. There was also an Okudagram showing one in Keiko's schoolroom in DS9.

The Gorn appeared in TAS as did the Tellarites, the Organians were repeatedly mentioned after their first appearance in TOS as were the Tholians.

My best guess is the Tholians.

It can't be the Organians because the Klingons were introduced in that same episode. I guess it must be the Tholians. But that would be more than thirty years, right?

I wish I could remember the story I heard.

I forgot to answer your post earlier.

I think you're talking about Tom Paris. It can't have escaped anyone's notice that Paris is very similar to Robert Duncan McNeill's character Cadet Nick Locarno from the TNG episode "The First Duty". Many have asked why they did not just use Locarno.

Voyager's producers insist that it was not because they would have to pay Ron Moore and Naren Shankar royalties for the use of their character, but because they felt that Locarno was "irredeemable".

In addition, there is the Vulcan character Vorik. Vorik is, again, very similar to Alexander Enberg's character Taurik from TNG's "Lower Decks" (story by Ron Wilkerson and Jean Louise Matthias, teleplay by René Echevarria). Voyager co-creator Jeri Taylor, who is also Enberg's mother, just jokes that they are twin brothers.

Yeah, I think you're right. I heard that Tom Paris story, too, so my subconscious probably combined them.

I know my wife will be celebrating this. She thinks the Bratz dolls are dressed like prostitutes and has told all family members that they are NOT to buy our daughter any for Christmas.

As parents of a five year old girl, we feel the same way. However, I was disappointed when I read the actual story. At first, all I saw was 'judge bans Bratz dolls'. Now I realize he merely banned MGA from making Bratz dolls. Surely, if all MGA appeals fail, then Mattel will make some kind of deal with MGA and start making the line.

So they are not going to disappear from the face of the earth. Although, come to think of it, I wouldn't mind watching something like "Hellboy III: Hellboy vs Bratz".

Obviously, it's not Vulcans, Romulans, or Klingons as they all appeared on screen within twenty years of their debut. :)

You can rule out Tellarites and Andorians; they were created by Dorothy Fontana, and she continued to be in good graces with the franchise until Roddenberry's lawyer drove her off in 1987. Their reason for not appearing in TNG is that Roddenberry didn't want to see original series races in the new series, not anything personal.

You can rule out Organians; they were created by Gene Coon in the same episode where he created the Klingons.

You can rule out the Horta and the Gorn; they were likewise created by Gene Coon, and if Coon's estate had no problems with the Klingons appearing, it's a fair bet there was no problem with the Horta or the Gorn reappearing.

That leaves, out of that list, the Tholians. Created by Judy Burns and Chet Richards. It's probably safe to assume that it's the Tholians.

However, "Balance of Terror" writer Paul Schneider did try to get the WGA to award him royalties for the use of the Romulans, same as writers get for reuse of their characters. Like Jerome Bixby's attempt for royalties on the reuse of the Mirror Universe, the WGA said "No."
