Brannon Braga & "The Next Generation"...

I know "Sub Rosa" was a little out there and it's near heresy to admit that you don't revile it, but I honestly didn't mind it. I was honestly spooked by some moments. To wit: the whispering to Beverly in the night, the mirror reveal of Ronin, the sudden filling of the house with flowers. And I loved Ned. His line "DINNA LIGHT THA' CAAAN-LLE!" is one of my favorites to this day; mainly I shout it to friends of mine while drinking. But I digress.

Now, Beverly's mother rising from her grave and speaking ... I could have done without that scene. But really, this episode isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. IMO.

Yes those are other elements I enjoyed as well.

I enjoyed Sub Rosa. There's loads about it I like - the unusual atmosphere, Picard's quip about getting his jacket, Gates looking lovely, Bev getting some in a very unusual fashion. I'm less crazy about FakeScotland, but I can live with that.

That's certainly true for a lot of episodes of Trek - I'm just thinking about all the hatred TATV gets. It's just silly (Actually, I've rewatched it today and came to the conclusion that kinda liked it - although it wasn't perfect and definitely a poor choice as Enterprise's finale).

But regarding the topic: I've always enjoyed Braga's work back in the days. Most of his TNG-Eps are among my favorites - can't recall any bad one. It does not surprise me that he made such a career within the franchise. What annoys me, is the hatred the man gets on certain boards - he deserves better than that.

I always liked his TNG episodes--a couple are among my top 10. I've only begun watching Voyager on dvd, thanks to the fan collectives--but I love the 7 or 9 character. I agree that Voyager would have been better in the middle with more character relationships--there should be hookups if it might become a generational ship, a real chance for something good was missed there. As for Enterprise, I liked seasons 1 and 2 the best, season 3 was fine, but season 4 is my least favorite. Big black mark for TATV, though, Mr. Braga!

So all in all--a great writer, I liked the Enterprise seasons that he produced, he seems like a decent enough human being--a guy who worked hard and produced a ton more wheat than chaff.

I agree with you on the TNG episodes and VOY, but I disagree with you on ENT. While I felt that the first season one was fairly good, if a little uneven, I found Season 2 to be really weak and just meandered. There was no point, no sense of wonder. There were good episodes, but for the most part, it felt like there was no Big Picture, no groundwork being laid for the founding of the Federation. Season 3 was good, especially in the finally third. I don't think Braga is the monster some people make him out to be, just someone who was given more than he could chew.

He was always at his best, though, when he was paired with Ronald D. Moore, because that's when their strengths really played off of each other -- Braga's excellency at plotting and gimmicks, Moore's excellence at characters. But Braga's always better when it comes to gimmicks and plots then he is with characters.
I couldn't agree with you more. Braga and Moore produced some wonderful stuff, some of the real high points of Trek. Braga on his own was completely hit or miss, usually miss. And Braga with Berman was a mistake that never should have happened.

I think his TNG stuff was quite good at the start. I enjoyed some of his Voyager and Enterprise attempts, though I think he just sort of Burned out on the whole star trek thing.

Braga and Moore didn't write too many episodes together. The only ones I can think of are Reunion, Azrael, All Good Things, Generations (movie), and First Contact (movie).

His hi-concept episodes were always fun and, in conjunction with other writers, produced some Trek classics.

But he wasn't the man to take charge of the franchise.

Agreed. He was over rated, and out of his prime, IMHO.
