Brannon Braga now in charge of Terra Nova

Who are the best "sci fi" showrunners/writers out there?

The guys behind Stargate?

Gough and Millar (Smallville)? --OK, scratch them. That show is 6 years past its sell-by date.

I'm hoping Manny Coto comes up with something cool.

I think that JH Wyman and Jeff Pinkner are doing a good job on Fringe. Though if you asked me that during the first half of season 2, I probably wouldn't have included them. The second half of season 2 was awesome though.

Bragga's the reason Ron Moore left Voyager. It would have ben a much stronger show if Moore had stayed and Bragga had left.
It wouldn't have made a damn bit of difference if UPN is the one still pulling the strings.

Exactly. Braga did some pretty stupid shit to Voyager, however you can't fully blame him for that. UPN wouldn't let Moore or Braga do what they wanted to and that's the real reason Moore left. They just wanted a redo of TNG.

What Braga should get bitched around for is Enterprise. UPN still were dicks but he had more freedoms and the show still sucked.

Well, Gough and Millar left Smallville two seasons ago, and it improved immensely once they left.

The Stargate people are good, but I wouldn't say they're the best. Most anyone out there who's a protege of Michael Piller from TNG/DS9 -- Ira Steven Behr, Naren Shankar, Rene Echevarria, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, Hans Beimler -- folks like that are pretty much the backbone of modern SFTV. You've also got up-and-comers like Zack Stentz & Ashley Miller, who wrote most of the best Andromeda episodes and did good work on Sarah Connor Chronicles and now Fringe. They're bound to get a show of their own before much longer. They and their colleagues from TSCC, like Josh Friedman and Toni Graphia, are ones to watch. There's also Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who's worked on a number of successful shows including Charmed and Lost, but whom I'm including because he created The Middleman, a brilliant SF comedy that deserved to be far more successful than it was.

Abrams, Orci, Lindelof, Cuse, Kurtzman, and Burk. You can probably throw Moore in there too. Those are the guys that keep getting new shows.

Well, Braga does okay when he isn't constrained too badly by idiot Execs so I'll give him another shot.

:wtf: Actually, he needs to be constrained. He's terrible when he's in charge. He can write some good stuff when constrained by others.

Mr Awe

In VOY and ENT he wasn't really in charge, "Exec Producer" there just meant he was the designated target for audience rage.

"Threshold" was alright.

I loved the Middleman, so nice to discover I'm not the only person in the world who watched it!

That's not exactly true. In seasons 5 & 6 of VGR and seasons 1-3 of ENT, Braga was the showrunner, meaning the head of the writing staff, the person setting its creative direction. Although in the latter case, Berman took on the role of co-showrunner, participating in the writing process far more directly than he did on any of the previous shows. Prior to ENT, the only actual scripts Berman had done had been "Brothers" and "A Matter of Time" for TNG; otherwise he'd only contributed to the occasional story outline. He mostly handled the logistical side of the production and left the creative side to his showrunners (though he still had final approval). But on ENT, he took on the role of Braga's regular writing partner for the first time. And I consider that to be the most likely reason why ENT was so inferior in the writing department -- because someone who wasn't a very experienced writer was taking a direct hand in the writing. Berman did a great job handling the logistical side of Trek production, but when he crossed over into the writing side, he was out of his area of expertise and it showed.

Who bought Manny Coto in to try and save ENT?
