Brannon Braga Interview in IF Magazine

In an interview in IFMagazine.com, Brannon Braga says a few non-committal, politically-correct things about Abrams' Star Trek.

Here's an excerpt:

iF: That said, how do you feel about J.J. Abrams coming in and re-envisioning TREK, having spent so much time with the franchise over the years?

BRAGA: My analogy with STAR TREK is I divorced my wife, I love her dearly, she’s with a great guy, and I’m so happy for her. At the same time, in the back of mind, someone else is with my wife. That’s how I feel. I can’t help but feel emotionally attached to STAR TREK. But predominantly my feeling is it’s in great hands with J.J. Abrams and I can’t wait to see the movie.

iF: Have you seen the trailer?

BRAGA: It’s great, it’s dynamic, it’s different. Unless J.J. invites me to the premiere, I’ll be in line with everybody else.

The way this guy ran Star Trek into the ground, I have no idea why anyone would be remotely interested in anything he had to say about it.

My expectations on Trek XI have to do with the success of other things that JJ Abrams has done. If it is anything like Fringe, for example, we should be in for a treat. The comparison to Star Wars he keeps making is a bit troubling, though. Trek is like nothing else.

Braga was only one component in the franchise's recession. I for one was not a fan of the direction he took, but he *was* placed in the position he was by those that held the keys to the franchise. If it's that necessary to lay the blame with someone/thing, why not them?

Invoking an ex-wife is the most depressing kind of sexual analogy, if it even really is one.

If it's that necessary to lay the blame with someone/thing, why not them?

I feel for the guy, because hey he tried, failed, but did try. That should count for something I think.

But what I don't get is how he says that Trek was basically an endless pool of possibilities and it certainly felt like he ran out of possibilities starting about oooooh 99 or so.

He was WRITING for Star Trek for nearly 15 years straight. I do think it's possible to run out of ideas and steam at some point. He did. Star Trek did.

I'm glad he still views it that way. I got to meet him last summer and he seems very enthusiastic about the new film.

He can still view Star Trek as having those possibilities, knowing that he tapped his own reserve of ideas doesn't necessarily mean that more ideas can't exist.

I think the Braga bashing is petty and people need to grow up and let it go.

I enjoy some of Abrams work (including "Fringe"), and like you base my expectations of XI on my experiences with those programs (along with other things that have come out in the last year or two). In general, I think he has approached the making of this movie with great respect for the franchise.

Regarding the Star Wars mentions/comparisons... I think it depends on what comments you are referring to. He was a fan of the franchise more so early on, but I don't hold that against him. I think a lot of Trek fans were Star Wars fans at one time (or currently are fans). I do think he wants to bring a little of the "epic" nature that Star Wars contains, over to the Star Trek franchise. I don't see that as a negative as long as the story isn't sacrificed. I certainly don't want to see Star Trek turn into Star Wars. I like that each franchise brings something different to the table. I'm not worried.

Since this thread was mainly about Braga on XI/Abrams, I just mentioned him. I do agree that the powers that be hired him and therefore are somewhat responsible for the course that Star Trek has taken.
