Brands that were once popular....

Another technically "still around" game company is Coleco.

We had one of these in the 70's, B&W only.

Wow, had no idea about Coleco. Interesting. I of course remember them from way back when, but thought they were one of those lost in the shuffle and gaming bust.

I agree about the Atari logo. One of the most recognizable logos around, IMHO, and that's possibly why they were bought out for the branding.

One brand of soft drink that I haven't seen in ages is Vernor's. It's likely still around, but it's one of those fleeting brands that only seems to surface rarely. Last time I saw it was likely 10-15 years ago.

Vernor's is still around. They were bought by Dr. Pepper/Snapple. Still hard to find, though, it's a regional thing like Cheerwine.

Swiss Creme soda (Canfields) was also bought by Dr Pepper/Snapple, but it's still only available in certain areas.

WTF? If a bigger company buys a brand like that, why not make it available everywhere?

I believe Dr. Pepper Snapple acquired Canfield's for its massive production / bottling apparatus.

OK, but if you decide to keep a brand/flavor/etc. after that point, why not use your existing (massive) distribution network to get to a larger market?

Probably because Swiss Creme was always a Chicago-area thing and A&W Cream Soda is far more nationally known.

I absolutely hate brown creme soda. Red too.

I think people mostly like one kind or the other, I doubt it would weaken the A&W brand having Swiss Creme alongside it.

But here in the Chicago area, north actually, I only ever find Swiss Creme in 2L bottles, which I hate buying because I never finish it before it goes flat.

I haven't seen cans in years.

Here in Washington before the Great Recession we had a bank called Washington Mutual - whose slogan was 'A Friend of the Family'. Throughout the seventies and early eighties they ran commercials with an elderly gentleman providing the voiceover. I think he used to be a well-known actor, I can picture him but I can't think of his name. Peach Wookiee any ideas?

Oh, man how I loved Swiss Creme Soda! Having the same experience (2L, no cans) in the Western 'burbs and Southwest 'burbs, Pharazon. Can still find the Black Cherry every once in a Blue Moon, but it is not the same.

I worked for Yoo-Hoo when the Cadbury/Schweppes group bought us and then they spun off Dr. Pepper/Snapple group. The truth of the matter is they didn't really want Yoo-Hoo but we also owned and bottled Orangina. That was the real prize in the acquisition, Orangina isn't as popular here as it is overseas. I was technically the very last employee of Yoo-Hoo, I went to Cadbury/Schweppes headquarter in Connecticut. I thought I was getting a job interview but unfortunately that wasn't the case. I was asked to stay on and do the data conversion from our systems to theirs and when that was done, I too would be downsized. They kept the people who worked in the plants that produced the product but everyone else in the company was fired. However I got to hang on longer and got a better severance package. I remember to this day everything when I shut down the servers. I loved working at Yoo-Hoo, it was the best job I ever had. Great company to work for, great people who loved their jobs. I got to travel, we had three plants and two corporate headquarters. I think I would have stayed their forever if the company was never sold. I have worked at some pretty great places but this was the best.
