Brand spanking new to Star Trek...starting from TOS beginning...

Recently while recovering from a shoulder surgery I really decided to embrace my love of science fiction. A friend recommended Stargate, so I devoured all 17 seasons (it was a long recovery from surgery) and most of the literature.

As much as I enjoyed that, I had always been on the outside looking in when it came to Star Trek. I've seen the older movies in passing and the new movies, but I am a purist when it comes to things like this, and I want to start watching and reading from the beginning. I like to go through in order as much as I can.

I've been looking for lists and I think I've found the right one for watching the shows, but I am looking for literature lists. I'm all for going allllll the way back to 1968's Mission to Horatius or the early episode volumes if that's what I should do.

I'm really pumped to start this journey into everything Star Trek and I'm going to begin watching TOS pretty soon. I hope to read and share in some of these amazing discussions.

Cheers.

As a 49 year old Brit, I find it impossible to imagine never having seen Trek. Will be fun to see what you think.
Once done, see if you can find Blake's 7.
I've seen episodes and movies in passing, but I have never followed any series or season. I turn 30 this year and grew up in a family that always played sports and I did not really discover my love for anything science fiction until a few years ago.

I'm looking forward to it.

Welcome! You will, of course, get 27 different contradictory pieces of advice regarding where to start reading. But personally, I recommend starting with "The Entropy Effect" (#2) by Vonda N. McIntyre, and then reading forward from there, by book number, through the Pocket Books novels. I've always found TrekLit before Pocket to be very hit or miss - mostly miss. But if you start where I suggest, you've got some great stuff ahead of you. I envy you, getting to read it all for the first time! :)

Now... I believe you said something about a spanking.....

Ah, I see. I was of the type who loved SF and tried to get out of sport as much as possible (though I did win a few cross country races. Well, top three). Enjoy!

Thanks for the heads up. I was looking at all of the Bantam lists pre-Pocket and I've already seen so many different opinions. I don't mind stumbling through some of the early muck if it is actually worth the read.

The Bantams are rarely good. Galactic Whirlpool is a definite read though, and I have a guilty liking for Death'sAngel and the Phoenix pair. Otherwise... skip, maybe.

Hey that's awesome! I've been watching through all the treks for quite some time now, but my current watch-through is being done according to the Star Trek Chronology Project, and to be honest I've noticed things (such as story over-lappings between The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine) that I had never noticed before.

When you get to The Next Generation try and watch it on Blu-Ray. It's definitely worth it! I'm envious! It's been sooo long since my first watch-through!!

I saw that site for the Chronology Project. Pretty impressive. I do have a minor OCD for watching things in order like that so I will probably take a look for the second time around. I think I will purely run through the timeline of how things aired for my first go and stick to the release as it happened. I do want to weave in some of the LitVerse when I get to that point and I will want those to go in order.

I just watched my first ever four episodes of TOS S1 last night.
