box office

Considering that it looks like the current film will come in around what Man of Steel did domestically, makes one wonder what is the difference for international audiences?

It is an interesting one - it is a fun popcorn movie (overall) but clearly international audiences just not that interested.

Next weekend will show us how front loaded box office was.

It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s A Box Office Hit: ‘Superman’ Opening To $123M – Sunday AM Update

UPDATE EARLY SUNDAY: Sources are telling us that Superman‘s Saturday is coming in around $37M, -34%, which is indicating a $123M opening for the James Gunn directed DC Studios film, the first in the phase “Gods and Monsters”.

These figures do not come from Warner Bros. If they hold, execs should be doing the Krypto doggie dance in the morning as it’s Warners second $100M-plus opening this year after A Minecraft Movie ($162M), the second-best opening for a Superman movie overall behind Batman v. Superman ($166M), the best opening for a Superman first franchise installment ahead of Man of Steel ($116.6M reported 3-day), and the second best opening, as we said all along, for Gunn behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5M).

BYW, just with respect to how the business has changed over decades, the original Star Wars ran for over forty weeks in its first theatrical release.

A successful film now will generally go to VOD in 10 to 15.

A Tom Cruise and Nolan movie only comes to VOD after 10-15 weeks. Other movies, if they flop at the box office, come to VOD after 2-3 weeks, and if they're successful, they come to VOD after 5-6 weeks.

So the box office on this continues to be interesting - in every update I see, the domestic box office beats predictions and is higher and higher while international ones go lower and lower...

There is a good chance that internationally it is beaten by Black Adam.

If Superman's international earnings are lukewarm, VOD schedule should be in the 5-6 range.

Superman...has leaped to a $217M global opening. That’s in line with the pre-weekend projection of at least $200M. Yesterday (see below), we increased that to the $210M+ range.

The majority of business came from domestic as the Gunn-directed Warner Bros tentpole experienced some (not unexpected) softness in parts of Asia, while in such European majors as Germany, France and Italy, Supes landed a 2nd place start as Jurassic World Rebirth tugged on his cape to retain No. 1 in the sophomore session.

The film opened with a record opening but didn't hold up well. This summer's winners will be Final Destination Bloodlines, JW, and How to Train Your Dragon. Perhaps if the film is well-received and its budget doesn't exceed $50 million, Naked Gun will do well at the box office. But I'm not so sure about that.
