Wow, Avatar has made serious bank! And those seem like good numbers for Sherlock Holmes, too, huh?

Is this Up in the Air's first week in wide release, or is it just not doing well?

1st or 2nd week for wide release (limited before) didn't cost much so Worldwide will give it some $$$ Oscar noms/wom could give it that push that some oscar movies of last 2 years got.

Avatar is 100% to break $300 domestic, most likely will break $350 and is probably 50/50 to break $400 million domestic. Oversea's number is going to break half a billion and more its no stupid thing to say Avatar has a wonderful chance to break the 1 billion mark.

Avatar only lost 3% from last week.

I think the sequel will be getting made and Avatar could become the so called biggest movie ever not accounting for inflation.

Sherlock Holmes broke the XMas Day opening day record.

The weekend record was also broken and Sherlock production budget is estimated to be 80-100 million though no official word so it should turn a good profit.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel doing better than The Princess and the Frog makes baby Jesus cry.

I remember the Fox execs saying they purposely put this up against Avatar (also their movie) as a JUST in case movie, since it was almost guaranteed to make a profit since it was the surprise hit of last season.

Seems like Fox is double happy this weekend.

It's great that this week has seen not only Christmas Day records broken, but also weekend records broken: this was the biggest weekend ever at the box office, with the top 12 films earning an estimated $264,152,000 (the previous record was July 18-20, when The Dark Knight opened, and the top 12 films earned $253,586,871).

Perhaps one could optimistically look at this as a sign that the economy is ever-so-slightly getting better. :)

^Or that ticket prices are skyrocketing. People should also take into account that IMAX tickets are also twice the price of regular tickets, which attributes to a lot of the sucess for Avatar.

^ A valid point, but I'd prefer to look on the bright side and stick with my theory. :p

I'm frankly impressed Sherlock Holmes did the business it did if other theaters treated as poorly as one of my local cineplexes.

While AVATAR was in IMAX and in two of their 500 seat theaters for regular Holmes was in one 350 seater and one 150 seater?!? The Chipmunks sequel got better placement for seating possibilites. It got two of the 350 seaters.
I was in Holmes for the 150 capacity theater and it was packed.

^LOL, that would be funny. Personally, I hope Titanic isn't dethroned. Of the two, I think it's definitely the better movie.

Avatar made another $19,418,139 yesterday, the second-best non-holiday Monday gross ever for a film (first is held by The Dark Knight). This movie is a monster... I hope I enjoy it when I finally get around to seeing it.

Also yesterday, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel made $12,096,892, and Sherlock Holmes brought in $11,190,000. Yep, the Chipmunks sequel made more yesterday than Sherlock Holmes. That just seems so wrong.

I don't understand this Avatar thing. I had only ever heard of the movie about a week and a half ago, and it looks awful to me (and I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to movies). And everyone I know said it looks silly and they have no desire to see it. So why is it so popular?? Are there that many teenage boys in the country??

^I heard about Avatar a long time ago (I work with a lot of guys  ) and I didn't really see what the Big Deal about it was. Having seen it, I still don't, other than the fact that it's visually stunning and does tell an exciting if familiar--oh so familiar and heavy-handed--story. I enjoyed it--it certainly wasn't a waste of my time by any means--but I wasn't blown away by it either.

I weep for Princess and the Frog and 2d animation in general. Do people see hand drawn animation as in the same vein as black & white these days(something that's quaint & inferior so its a must avoid)?
Would PATF be doing better if it was CGI? really? :(

Avatar made $18,290,628 on Tuesday, putting it over $250 million domestic.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel was #2 with $12,532,035, putting it over $100 million domestic.

Sherlock Holmes was #3 with an estimated $10.24 million, putting it at $83.8 million domestic.

The Blind Spot, at #6, is a lock to go over $200 million domestic. It's the biggest domestic gross of Sandra Bullock's career to date.
