Based on her overall demeanor during the occupation...I suspect Dukat mandated she wear one at all times under her uniform.
Considering the lasting impact of these films, is the following scenario not possible?
Like Jackson Pollock, more in their process than technique Lucasfilm artists, threw down some design ideas on to the big white canvas, and Lucas, fueled with Jungian psychology, came through and let his Id do the deciding on what designs to use in the film. Because of his knowledge of psychology and anthropology, the connections used for the design elements, were not only effective but tapped into our collective sub conscience mind. For example, when a speeder-bike pilot's helmet makes him look like a horse with blinders on, we are effected on multiple levels. One part of our brain says "cool" and another part registers this character as a myopic minion of the Empire. With Leia's disguise, the allusions to Vader, and the surprise factor probably all played a role. Her grenade made her a "bombshell." Her provocative mouth piece alluded to puckering lips in an exaggerated kissing position referencing the past and foreshadowing her future with Han. Our subconscious mind whispered, "It's the kissing woman--you know.....Leia..." She also wields a large spear like an Amazonian gaurdian, her cape is only on one side of her body...alluding to the one breast removal practice of the Amazons, to allow for better archery skills. This practice also symbolized Leia's complete devotion to the rebel cause, her willingness to face danger and perhaps her potential for self-destructive behavior, namely in her resistance to partner with Han. When Leia removes the mask, she let's go of her inner Amazon and surrenders herself in traditional devotion to a man, Han Solo and the audience swoons. Her disguise was just random?
So did Vader and the Emperor just totally miss the boat on the whole Han rescue thing? You would think one of those guys would have figured out Luke would probably go and rescue his friend, and set up an ambush to capture him. Can't remember why Mara Jade was there, and I haven't read any EU in about 5 years now. But still, stands to reason.
Also it seems strange that most (well...the only ones that matter) of the Alliances key personnel are at Jabba's Palace captured. Would've sucked for the rebellion if they all died during a rescue mission.

If Luke died on Tatooine, the Rebel Alliance would have been unable to land on Endor and there would have been no fullscale attack on the Second Death Star. Because of this, the Emperor would not be able to set his trap. The Rebel Alliance would remain in hiding, moving planet to planet while plotting a way to destroy the Death Star.
In other words, even if the Emperor believed Luke would rescue his friends from Jabba the Hutt, it was not in his interest to stop them there. He would also miss out on an opportunity to convert Luke to the dark side were Luke to die there instead of going to the Death Star.

Except he sent Mara Jade there specifically to assassinate Skywalker and he tortured her with visions of that singular failure through the Force, even after death, when Luke went on to "kill" him with a traitorous Vader on the second Death Star, driving her to seek out Luke in the post-ROTJ era.

Jade, armed with her lightsaber, the Force and trained as an assassin by the Sith was really the only one capable of stopping Luke's rampage during the escape. Jabba's conspiratorial mind ended up dooming him.

Funny thing, apparently the Vorta and Changelings have never seen a Breen outside of their armor and there was a conversation about that fact in one episode. So when Kira donned the Breen outfit a second time a recapper (I forget where) said "So Kira has seen what a Breen looks like and again isn't telling anybody!"
Yeah, I was one of the people who was really looking forward to seeing what a Breen really looks like without the armor. But we were never shown this.
At least we finally got to see the Breen in action in DS9; in Next Gen they mentioned them a few times, but never showed the Breen at all.

I like to think those exo-suits are empty and the Breen either remote pilot them from their ships...or the Breen have been extinct for years and a bunch of their hyper advanced A.I.s have been maintaining a facade.
That or the Breen dissolve and evaporate as soon as you open that helmet on an oxygen atmosphere. Either way, it's curious that they are seen wearing those suits even on their own ships. Perhaps it's a similar situation to the Quarrians from Mass Effect?

Books I assume? It's a mixed bag. If you think the book's account makes more sense, that's fine.
