Borg desiginations

Hugh, was 3rd of 5.
Seven was 7 of 9.

What happens when the group they are in has members killed like Hugh's, or removed like Seven was removed. Like in Seven's group, did 8 of 9 become 7 of 8? Or what if some are moved around to other groups. Like a group of 10 has 1 of 10 and 3 of 10 moved to another group and 4 more added to replace and augment he group, does 2 of 10 become 1 of 12 and 4 of 10 become 3 of 12 and everyone one from the old group of 10 moved up one and be become 4 of 12, 5 of 12 to finally 12 of 12?

Would Hugh have been 1 of 1 until he had been put into another group before the individuality he brought the ship took hold?

The Voyager episode Survival Instinct has a flashback which shows the others from the group of nine Seven belonged to. Even though in that episode there were only four left including Seven, they all kept the "of Nine" part of their designations, and kept their same designations from before.

That would seem confusing. Unless the entire designation is always used, like Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero-One.

Well, although the show probably wouldn't do the best job showing it, one would assume that a Species like the Borg would always use the entire designation. Most of their communication should be non-verbal anyway. They're basically one giant internet, so accuracy is more important than the very small amount of extra time/energy needed to achieve that accuracy.

The verbal part could well be purely for the benefit of the human listeners - so it would amount to the same thing as calling Chandragupta "Chuck": it doesn't convey even part of the original meaning or content, but it's practical.

I guess I always assumed, since they're not individuals, that they likely got redesignated all the time. I also don't see why, when one is killed/lost/removed from a grouping, the others would move up the number scale. That would imply promotion, which again shouldn't matter to the Borg.

I assumed the same as Svenden plus is someone dies they are simply replaced when a new drone is assimilated.

Agreed. If a member of a sub-collective was lost it would eventually be replaced if the sub-collective became inefficient, but perhaps when the Collective creates sub-collectives it takes into account the potential for a drone to be lost, and makes sure there is some redundancy built into the sub-collective.

In Dark Frontier, The Hansens catalog a newly transferred drone. Magnus Hansen asks his wife what the drone's previous designation was. Which was Three of Five, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01.

It is possible that drones have multiple designations, or addresses, depending on which matrix they exist they're assigned, their location, their vessel, their species, including their previous assignments.

Perhaps Borg get reassigned and re-designated when the collective assimilates someone who is better suited for that function.

For example, someone who may have just been assimilated and has a higer IQ may make a better auxiliary processor than the current drone in that position, so the current one gets reallocated to perform a different function, and the new drone takes on the role of auxiliary processor.

I like this. My head-canon has been appropriately modified, thank you!

(BTW. I appreciate your designation!)
