Glad I bought a Kindle instead of a Nook.
Actually bought a Kindle because the salesman at my local Barnes and Noble just seemed slimey while trying to push a Nook on me.
I don't know what that last bit means but it sounds.....dirty.

My local Borders superstore is apparently on the closing list. I'm not surprised. The local Barnes and Noble superstore gets all the customers (better location, been there longer, etc.). I can't imagine it will be good for the plaza Borders was sitting on, though... I expect a lot more closings in that area...
There are two Borders in my area- the one closest to me was spared. I'm not surprised- they're ALWAYS busy and the checkout lines back up even when all registers are open. It's a good store. The other one is smaller, and it's closing. Too bad- the people were so friendly and helpful.
The Borders in Lancaster, PA was my first experience with a "big-box" bookstore, and it was an awe-inspiring place to go. Of course, this was back in the early 90s, so I'm sure it's a very different place today. The B&N that I work at now has a Borders right around the corner and they're closing. That store always seemed cavernous and empty (of both product and customers), so its closure was a long time coming.
I think you've got that backwards. It's not that Borders (or B&N for that matter) is selling $20 DVDs for $35, it's that Amazon and Walmart are selling $35 DVDs for $20.
The thing that really bites about that fact is that one of the ones staying open for now in Albuquerque is out our new-ish outdoor mall, which I love visiting. It has a lot of great shops that aren't located anywhere else in town and to have a big empty storefront where the Borders is will be depressing to see..
Sadly, there's a huge Barnes and Noble just across the street from it, so the likelyhood of them moving in as a replacement is slim to none...
A bit of thread necropsy, but somehow appropriate given the subject. Another Washington state Borders location is biting the dust. The Tacoma location at 38th and Steele, now has "store closing" banners on it. Apparantly the owner of the building wanted a higher rent and Borders, given their current situation, decided not to take them up on the offer. Was in there yesterday and they're giving at least 20% off most of the stock still on the shelves.
Yeah, Borders was never the place to buy DVDs. The sales are great for books however.
Some are. I dunno-they never seemed to have a good handle on promoting anything but the Flavor of the Week. The sales were there-but you really had to dig. I broke protocol once and pushed a "minor" sale in my merchandising. Penguin Classics. Nice copies with cool covers of the lit classics.
We sold our stock down to almost nothing. I got a write up for "failing to execute my position properly according to company guidelines."
I gave notice a few weeks later...didn't need to see rats leaving to know there was nothing worth staying for...
Oh, I meant the going out of business sales. Those are worth it.
I never regularly shopped at Borders. I went to Barnes and Noble or Amazon if I was buying new.
Borders was/is good if you tend to buy a lot of books and was part of their free membership program. In addition to in-store deals, you frequently got email coupons ranging from "five bucks off your order" to "buy 2, get 1 free." Those definitely came in handy if you liked several ongoing series of books.
I used to go to my local Waldenbooks store two or three times a month, but when Borders shut it down, they pretty much lost me as a customer because the nearest Borders store was out of the way for me.

Tell me about it. The only DVD set I bought from my local Borders was TNG season 2, and that was only because I couldn't find it anyplace else. Cost me $15.00 more that what I paid for the rest of them at Best Buy.
