Boomchicken DPS (WoW)

Okay, I've got a lvl 80 boomchicken that I occasionally raid with. He's not fantastic, but he's decent. He's got a hear score of around 2535, and all but one of his items is over 200.

I'm fairly comfortable with my rotation for him.

Faerie Fire
Moonfire
Wrath till eclipse
Starfire
Rinse/Repeat

I'm only pulling 3200 dps, and I know I should be pulling twice that much.

My hit rating is at 16.43%, and working to 17% (new gloves and head on the way), but still...

So, can anyone give me some pointers on racking up some better dps on this bird?

I would say with that gear, your dps isn't that bad. Boomkins have the lowest dps in the game and can be tough to play. Get your 4PT9 and then report back on your numbers. Boomkins are really punished by movement, so your dps will be hurt in movement fights.

Are you getting your dps numbers from a dummy or from a raid fight?

We did ToC 10-man last night, and another Boomchicken was kicking my behind, and I realized I needed to catch up. Normally, for ToC, I can pretty much just stand in one spot and cast, so I thought it was a good run to check my numbers on.

Did you just start playing this game? No offence, but you seem a bit disconnected from reality. Why do you think you should be doing more than 3200 dps in entry level gear? A seven thousand dps Boomkin is T9 geared, you are obviously not. Why do you think you should be doing as much dps as the Boomkin in that ToC10? Was he equally geared to you? Are you basing that on anything but his gearscore?

Why are you trying to get a 17% hit rating? Do you mean with gear or gear plus talents.

How well geared are you compared to the other Boomkin? My knowledge of Boomkins is limited at best (I know they make a funny squawk when smacked), so any advice I can give is about the general stuff at best. Whether you're a clicker or use keybindings, latency (quartz is good for that), using the correct priorty system/rotation, etc. Looking at your armory, though, I personally wouldn't be expecting 6k+ dps.

There might also be a mod that you can use for your priority/rotation. Ovale might have a module/script for Boomkins. I found FCFS was great for me when I first started attending raids as ret. I knew the priorities, but I wasn't nearly as efficient as I had thought. There were some other benefits that came from using it, like adjusting to the 2pcT10 bonus, and keeping my eyes directed more towards the center of the screen instead of my toolbars.

I also like Rawr for getting a general idea of how I should be doing given gear, raid setup, fight type, etc. It's been handy with gauging how well I might do. There are other spreadsheets, websites, etc that you can get that are also useful.

Looking at your armory, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of some of your talents. You only need 10%-13% hit, not 17%. Read your talents, specifically Improved Fairie Fire and Balance of Power, and read this short article. Get Abyssal Rune from ToC5 if you don't already have it and put that hit trinket in the bank. That website has a ton of information, you should go there and read for an afternoon. Find out how to gem right. As you get more gear, try to get all of your hit from it and save your trinket, enchant and gem slots for non-hit stats, usually spellpower unless you've got a good 5-9 sp bonus from gemming a sp+haste gem or a +7-9 bonus with a blue sp+spirit gem. Ignore crit and spirit bonuses, but take your meta gem requirement into account. That's just rough though.

And I know you said that's all you can afford for gems, but those aren't even the cheap early-WOTLK gems, those are BC, and they aren't even the right kind stat wise. Go do some dailies dailies or farm or whatever and make some money. You need a different meta gem, that one is crap. Get the 21 crit + 3% crit damage one. You have the wrong major glyphs and your spec is 3.1-3.2 style. Your leg enchant is cheap, so is your chest enchant.

Copy this Moonkin's spec and glyphs, he does 9k dps in ICC25 gear and has been playing balance for two years.

You're never going to be busting out thousands of dps unless you enchant, spec and gem properly, doesn't matter if you're doing the correct spell priority or not.
