Bookmarks

By 'bookmarks' I mean whatever you use to mark your place in a book. Do you buy bookmarks, make your own, use a piece of torn off paper, a receipt, postcard etc or do you dog-ear a page?

Nowadays I mainly use the bookmarks that are sometimes sent to me when I buy a book from Book Depository but sometimes I use a postcard or an old playing card.

I use a bookmark if, say, I get one when I buy a book, or if I have a receipt or something handy. Otherwise, I usually dog-ear. I've never believed in going out of my way to keep my books pristine.

I don't think I've ever bought a bookmark and I don't like to dog-ear pages, but yes to any and all of the rest. I have a few bookmarks of the sort given away as promotions for book stores, libraries and book-related events, but just as often any bookmark-sized flat object found within reach can become a bookmark.

My bookmarks are either the free bookmark I get when I buy a new book (which has been a while) or, more usually, a scrap of paper.

I have a few actual bookmarks- right now I'm using one with Star Wars characters on it and another with Salvador Dali artwork- but I generally use whatever I have lying around. Receipts are handy (and they always give you one, no matter where you bought the book), but anything generally the right size will do. I once used a shoe.

My bookmarks are some piece of crap in the bottom of my bag which I replace with the next piece of crap when the last one falls out and is lost.

Most of the bookmarks I use are ticket stubs from plays that I've particularly enjoyed, plus a few other odds and ends with similar meaning.

Sometimes, if I don't have a piece of paper, I'll either use my library card, or if my wallet isn't nearby, I'll just try to memorize the page number by staring at it for a few seconds. :D

I have a simple bookmark I bought years ago and I usually use that. If not, I just use a piece of paper.

I also have an elegant silver bookmark that a colleague gave to me as a thank-you gift. However, I don't really use it because it is a bit heavy.

I'm another one who typically would just use a receipt or other handy scrap of paper, rather than a formal bookmark (never dog ear.)

Although, these days, most of the time my bookmark is a double tap on the upper right hand corner of my e-reader screen. ;)

I also have a beautiful silver bookmark that was given to me as a gift, and had the exact same problem. The ornamental piece at the top was lovely but too heavy and always made the darn thing fall out of place. Form over function, I guess.

I generally use the paper in my hand, it can be anything.

I'm another one of these anything-that's-handy people, though I've been making an effort recently to use the free bookmarks that you get with your purchase at the bookstore.

I don't dog-ear, but I don't buy bookmarks, either.

I buy a lot of books second-hand from online booksellers and they often include a promotional bookmark, so usually I have a few kicking around, but sometimes I leave them in books and forget them. If I'm running low I grab some giveaways that are always on the counter at the library. If I can't find any at all I usually use a piece of memo pad paper folded double.
