Booking Rankings

I was wondering if anyone has ever compiled a rating systems for books. Naturally its very subjective but I'm surprised there isn't one out already. I'm thinking along the lines of looking up a book on our own version of an IMDB "Oh this book got 8.7. I should pick it up" That sort of thing

I used to run a "Star Trek Novel Rankings" website, but I think it was last updated in the Second Age of Mankind. Also, I don't even remember the web address. And it had about two loyal voters.

Are you talking about books in general or just Trek? Because for all books, I just look them up on Amazon. As for Trek specifically, I don't know of anything that gathers ratings like IMDB.

LibraryThing.com is also good for rankings, though I tend to find reviews (and LT's excellent recommendation engine) more useful than abstract numerical scores.

Thanks, that looks like what I'm aiming for. I was thinking of Trek books specifically but this site seems to work.

I've never had much faith in the Amazon reviews. I usually find there aren't a lot of comments for each book, so you end with one guy's opinion. Which I might agree with or might not

Really? When I look on there most of the Trek books usually still have a few, although are definitely alot slower building than other books.

I don't trust Amazon reviews because the negative reviews are mostly rants about anything other than whatever they're supposed to be reviewing. Something along the lines of "The author's last book sucked so this one probably sucks too". Not very helpful at all.

Yep. I've seen people are bombing any kindle book over $10 with 1 star reviews. My favorite the though is the review that said "I liked the book but there was a crease in the cover from shipping so I'm going to give it 1 star".

I find Amazon reviews pretty useless.

I usually glance through the "most recommended" reviews (particularly the best of the positive and best of the negative reviews) on amazon.

Yeah, I see that alot too, so I usually skim through the reviews. Usually you can tell how good a review is by the headline and the length. If it's under two paragraphs I'll usually just ignore the review.

There was one person who gave a 1 star rating to These Haunted Seas because it's the omnibus edition of previous novels. They titled their 'review': "This is not a new book". :wtf: *facepalm*

There's a review for Star Trek: Missions End that reads: "Please indicate if a novel is a comic book instead of a paperback. This helps very much, When ordering in the future. Please try especially for collectors sake."

And then this fucktard wrote: "didn't realize that this was a comic book when I ordered it .... threw it in the trash!"

He threw it in the trash? Doesn't that moron know that Amazon has free returns? IDIOT!

Sand and Stars (the omnibus of Spock's World and Sarek) has 3 reviews, all saying, essentially, that it's nothing new. However, 2 of those 3 reviews are 1 star complainers. The third review, at least, is a much more legitimate 5 stars, with an explanation of its omnibus status, and a recommendation to buy it if you don't yet own the two previous works.

There's actually two of those now:wtf:. Maybe I'm weird, but I would think that someone buying something like this would do at least a little bit of research... at least enough to find out it's comic book. Besides, I would think the fact that it says a five issue miniseries in the blurb might point out that it's just a novel.

Doesn't always say that, though. Whenever I've gone looking for upcoming or existing superhero novels, it's been very hard, of late (with the plethora of reprint omnibuses of recent comic arcs), to tell if you're ordering a MMPB novel or a trade sized comic book omnibus. And sometimes a novel will have an identical title to a comic omnibus, or there's no cover image available.

I don't think many publishers are in the habit of releasing novels with dimensions of 10.2 x 6.5 x 0.5 inches.

Well, maybe that's a recent addition, or not every trade is so marked with physical dimension, because - about a year ago - it was driving me crazy. It was also when I tried to buy an old Wonder Woman hardcover novel, which had the same title as a different Wonder Woman trade comic omnibus - and neither version had the right cover art.
