Booby Trap escape maneuver

When Picard was piloting E out of the debris field in Booby Trap, using just a microsecond burst of impulse, and they started to lose velocity, why didn't they just apply a second and/or third microsecond burst, since the first one worked? Versus using an asteroid as a slingshot?
