Spoilers Bonus scene from Season One Finale

do you not think CBS is keeping tabs on everything Viacom does, including this new Tarantino movie? Of course they are.
Yes because CBS owns the damn franchise. They're the ones allowing Paramount to make the movies.

So of course CBS knows what they're doing because it is their property.

This isn't the case, and somebody else can come in and explain the legal loop hole around Star Trek ownership.

Learn to read. Viacom outsources all movie licensing and merchandising to CBS. They only make the movies and distribute them, and no longer touch merchandising themselves. The team that merchandises the show does the movies.

Why would Viacom need to do that if CBS owns the franchise and are independent?

All Viacom has is the movies, and even those are owned by CBS.

Some have already stated the show has lost them.

Something tells me they will be there to watch when it is released all the same.

Will I give the show another chance to engage me? Sure. But, if it is as creatively unimaginative as the first season was, I'll jump ship pretty quick.

There is quite a while before the new season so plenty of time for more positive information to hook you back in.

I consider the first season to be pure setup and scene setting for what is to come.

exactly,

from the Wondercon Panel

Aaron Harberts: [Season one] was an interesting season because it was set against the backdrop of war. One of things we are looking forward to in season two is a tone that we can now be in a more exploratory phase and a more diplomatic phase – maybe a bit more of a Trekian chapter…But, everything for us is really driven by character.

Yes, and Viacom is their absolute biggest partner for the franchise, to the extent this TV series has the same executive producer.
The movies were done through Bad Robot. DISCO is not. At best his association with Bad Robot got Kurtzman the job. But he's not working for Bad Robot.

They are talking to each other, and for anyone to reply "CBS doesn't tell Viacom anything" is absolutely ridiculous. You may as well be a flat earther, that's how stupid that comment is to me.
Viacom needs to talk to CBS because CBS own Trek. If CBS talks to Viacom its because CBS wants to, not because it has to.

By that same token, do you not think CBS is keeping tabs on everything Viacom does, including this new Tarantino movie? Of course they are. CBS gets hurt if we get Klingon SLJ calling everyone "mofo" this and "mofo" that, so they're probably looped into every executive email chain.
Of course they keep tabs, They own the property.

No. No. No.

Viacom owns the movie rights to Star Trek. They own them completely.

CBS owns the TV and all other rights to Star Trek. They own them completely.

Viacom lets CBS do all licensing and merchandising for their movies, because they wouldn't know where to begin and have tried before and flopped at it. They'd rather make less money giving it to CBS to do for them, than no money at all.

That doesn't mean CBS owns the movies. They don't. They just have licensing rights to them.

If you wanted to make a T-shirt with Kelvin Enterprise on it, you would need to ask CBS for permission. CBS has authority on behalf of Viacom to permit you to do that.

Viacom then makes a % off the sale of that T-shirt, along with CBS.
