Bond 23 on hold due to MGM sale

Drew McWeeny of HitFlix commented that Mendes has not signed the dotted line and is only in talks. He says even if Mendes does sign -- and the sale of MGM takes longer than anticipated -- he could very well walk. So we'll see, I guess.

Nikki Finke repots Mendes is singing on as consultant not director ? whats point use his real talents and get him behind that camera or if he is like J.J on the camera shaking it ;)

It's being reported that officially signing a director would have financial implications that they don't want yet given the situation with MGM, so they're signing Mendes as a consultant (so that he can start development work) with an eye to signing him as director once the situation is resolved.

Considering how well Quantum did at the box office (bashers can harp all they like, but it was still one of if not the best-performing Bond of all time) I'd seriously doubt whoever buys MGM will pull the plug.

Alex

Its not the fan response I'm worried about, it was lackluster though. Its the studio attitude.
If they act like, hey it made great money and translate that as "we did nothing wrong, we'll continue the same path" like SONY seems to be doing with SPIDEY 4 then they may not like the results.
Fans upon re-review didn't like Quantum overall. If Bond 23 follows that bland path it's very likely it'll underperform. Same is true for Spidey 4 if SONY doesn't get its head out of its ass and stop meddling in Raimi's kitchen!

^ The Bond producers do take note of what fans are saying and don't just go by how successful a film is. That's part of why there was such a gap between LTK and Goldeneye - the studio didn't want Dalton to return when the former underperformed. OTOH, Cubby Broccoli was quite adamant that Dalton was a good Bond who fans liked and refused to sack him. On the other hand, even though DAD was a huge hit, Cubby's successors were conscious that the series had gotten somewhat silly and larger than life and opted to go for a more gritty and realistic take, with the Craig reboot. They did something similar between Moonraker and FYEO.

I wouldn't agree with all the decisions Eon have made, but they do seem to have some sort of bottom line towards Bond that isn't totally money-related.

Nikki Finke has reported that Daniel Craig was stung by the criticisms of Quantum of Solace and pushed for Sam Mendes to be hired to right the ship from a creative point of view.

Daniel Craig was in Road To Perdition, of course. It's a sensible choice - Mendes appeals to both the arty and popular audiences, has worked with Craig, has handled big action, is known for good character work...

As for Quantum - it's split fandom a bit but overall it was popular enough, if not as wildly popular as CR. Craig has been saying since before QoS's release that the next one will be more standalone and a little lighter - and this is nothing new for Bond; they take it as far as it'll go in one direction, then they pull back and do something different.
