Bob Hoskins retires

Bob Hoskins is to retire from acting following a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease last autumn, it was announced on Wednesday.

A statement issued on his behalf said: "He wishes to thank all the great and brilliant people he has worked with over the years, and all of his fans who have supported him during a wonderful career. Bob is now looking forward to his retirement with his family, and would greatly appreciate that his privacy be respected at this time."

Hoskins, one of Britain's best-loved actors, known for his gruff bonhomie, has been working for more than 30 years. He first found fame on the small screen in Dennis Potter's Pennies from Heaven, and then in cinemas as a London gangster-turned-businessman in The Long Good Friday (1980).

Hoskins had leading roles in Brazil (1985), Mona Lisa (1986), Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) and Mermaids (1990) and Super Mario Bros (1993) – which he described in a recent Guardian interview as "the worst thing I ever did".

Just wanted to salute a great actor.

"I've put money in all your pockets". Classic.

Yeah he's a great actor. One of those rare types who can play loveable comedy types in one film, then scary gangsters in the next. Shame he's having to retire, but he leaves behind a great body of work.

Sorry to hear about the Parkinson's disease, that's a shame.
He's a great actor, and we'll continue to celebrate his work in DVD form for years to come.

Having worked in the entertainment industry for many years, I only truly believe an actor is "retired" when they are dead.

This goes for Peter O'Toole, as well.

But, best to Bob Hoskins. Here's hoping for new meds/techniques to keep his symptoms under control so that he can continue to give us memorable moments. Perhaps a duo-piece with Michael J. Fox.

Awwww. I will miss his work. He was one of my favorites---just an amazing actor with a lot of heart.

I hope he has a long, healthy and happy retirement.

I suppose this means the Roger Rabbit sequel is done for? Probably for the best.

Hoskins is a great actor, and he'll be missed on screen.

I guess there comes a time when every great has to close the curtain. But the good thing about cinema is that they'll eternally live on in our memories and on the big screen.
