Board/Card Games

I wanted to pass along some of my favorite board and card games.

1) Graverobbers From Outer Space http://www.zmangames.com/
is a card game where each player makes a B-movie from the different cards (location, character, special effect) while attacking the other player's movie with the other cards (monsters, special effects). The movie that has the most points at the end wins. The whole game is tongue in cheek, cheezy movie quotes, cheezy movie locations and monsters. It's very horror movie-esk, like Halloween, Army Of Darkness, Friday the 13th, 50's scifi movie, 50's Dracula, The Blob, etc.

2) TransAmerica http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TransAmerica_(board_game)
is a board game. The board is a stylized map of the United States with 5 regions in different colors with 8 cities in each zone. The object is to connect all 5 of your cities (one in each zone) by placing two railroad ties on each of your turns. You can connect to other player's tracks but they, in turn, can then use your tracks. The first person to connect all their 5 cities wins that round.

3) Cutthroat Caverns http://www.smirkanddagger.com/cutthroat.htm
is a card game. The object is to get through 8 "rooms" containing a monster and get the points for killing the monster. All the players work for this, but only the player that gets the kill gets the points. Each turn, you draw to see what order you go in. Each attack card has a point value that is added to the rest each turn to see if you overcome the monster's and is revealed in turn.

I have a few others, but this is a start. What others do you like playing?

I love card and board games.
Card games...
Spades- Been playing this a lot with some of my friends in the dorms. I'm told that it's similar to spades, but your goal is to collect "books" rather than avoid certain cards. Been getting pretty good, especially with bidding my hands.

Pinochle- I really liked this one, though it was tough remembering the rules. Haven't played it since my old boss left because no one else likes it.

Board games...
Monopoly- Currently holding an 8 out of the last 10 win streak. :D I really like playing Monopoly, but I don't do nice Monopoly. I do smack-mouth, bully the other players into working with me Monopoly. That always makes it entertaining.

Risk- Always a good classic.

Axis & Allies- Risk on steroids. I really enjoyed it, but i don't really have a group to play with because it takes too long for most people and they don't like devoting that much time to it.

Settlers of Catan- Haven't played in a while, but it's a really fun game that i enjoyed.

I play Texas Hold 'Em every Saturday night with a bunch of friends. We also play a few friendly card games like Chase the Ace or Shithead. Don't really play any board games though. Apart from when we all got drunk and tried playing Monopoly the other week. That was interesting.

I love board and card games, they're a lot of fun. Some of my favourites:

Settlers of Catan
Ticket to Ride
Mille Bornes
Carcassonne

I also love Settlers, Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne.

Some other favorites include:
Power Grid,
Pillars of the Earth
Blue Moon City
Pandemic
The Munckin game series
3 Dragon Ante
and San Juan, the card game.

If you're looking for a great card game for large groups, I suggest BANG!, which is an Italian game, using the spaghetti western as its theme. It's tremendous fun.

Diplomacy: Possibly the greatest strategy board game ever made. No dice all negotiations and strategy. Listed as Henry Kissinger's favorite game.

Agricola: all the excitement of a 17th century farm
http://www.zmangames.com/boardgames/agricola.htm

Axis and Allies: a classic that I have enjoyed since 1984

Supremacy: The real Risk on steroids. Nukes, Laser Sats, Money, Resources, Selling weapons to 3rd world Dictators.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supremacy_(board_game)

War Age Of Imperialism: Economy exploration and warfare all in one package.

Civilization: Not the Sid Miers one but the Avalon Hill classic trading game.
"I have 3 cards including hides for one point looking for cloth."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization_(board_game)

Illuminati: The Steve Jackson game of world domination through guile and treachery.

Squad Leader: Avalon Hill's iconic game of WW2 squad level combat.

I once found a very unusual board game based on the Titanic disaster, from the '70s. The designers had to be a little creative, sticking islands (!?) you could send the people to. The rules are a little morbid, actually.

Agricola: all the excitement of a 17th century farm

Ah, yes! My hubby loves this game. We have all the Meeples--little wooden piggies and vegetables. A nice game, but I lose HORRIBLY every time. Did you get the latest expansion--the one with peat, and trying to heat the houses? That makes the game a bit better, I think.
I have the expansion and it's pretty good. Horses are 1 vp each with no upper limit and have led me to quite a few wins.

^ Ticket to Ride is worth picking up. It's not at all complex, but it is fun and fast-paced. :)

Also, since a few others have mentioned it being a favourite for them as well, are any of the Carcassonne expansions worth picking up? Ours came with The River, but I've heard that a lot of the ones out there can be a bit detrimental to the game play.

I've seen Settlers of Catan in a lot of places. Is it worth buying? I think the last new one I bought was Munchkin. :D

Axis&Allies has been a favorite of mine since I was 10 years old (I am 32 now). Great game, I went through college without ever losing a game. Come to think of it, the only person who has ever beaten me is my Dad. We play every time he comes into town, great fun! Chess is always another good one. Used to play Diplomacy too, but it was destroyed in a flood and I never got another one.

Ahh, board games. Love them!

Settlers of Catan, Agricola (yay!), Pandemic, Battlestar Galactica, War of the Ring, Ticket to Ride, Galaxy Trucker, Carcassonne, ...
There's so many of them out there, so much quality! I've been meaning to pick up Power Grid, Twilight Struggle and this new game that looks very promising, Stronghold. Has anyone ever tried that one?

I don't like the classics though... Monopoly, Risk et al, they do nothing for me.

We've been playing a card game recently called Dominion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_(game) Pretty good game. Every game starts with randomly selected cards so every game is different. Players build their deck as the game goes on.

We were also playing a game called Bang! but I think we've burned out on that one.

i also enjoy Dominion

i like trading card games, but hate the collection part, this game eliminates that entirely.

I've seen Settlers of Catan in a lot of places. Is it worth buying? I think the last new one I bought was Munchkin. :D

Settlers is a great game. The only drawback is that you really need the expansion Cities and Knights to make it really good, IMO. There's also the Traders and Barbarians. I never play without both of these expansions. However, this stuff does not come cheap. It end up being a bit of an investment.
