Board/card games ~ do you play to win at any cost?

I don't like losing but I don't play to win at all costs. I'm fairly relaxed when it comes to board games (although I can get a bit stroppy if it's going REALLY badly).

But one of my friends is a really bad loser, and he'll ruin the game for the rest of us if he's not happy with something. We actually banned him from playing Catan

 Monopoly causes lots of problems

Wimps :) There was a RISK! marathon at my university that ended up in a full-scale ruck. What is it about that game that brings out the worst in people? ;)

You know the only time I nearly came to blows with someone in high school was over a game of Risk with a new group of friends (I had changed schools my sophmore year/grade 10). One of them was an irritating little right-wing jerk who liked to call people who made a bad throw of the dice "stupid" which after the sixth time caused me to lose my rag. He backed down and I got props from the other guys. Nothing like a good NERD RAGE!

I am actually the exact opposite of 'play to win'. I'm usually so busy socializing that I am barely aware that it's my turn. If they would let me sit at the table and not play at all, I'd be good with that.

And it's the same with semi-sporting games, like bowling. Yes, I'm that person - the one you have to yell at, every time it's their turn to bowl, because she is not paying attention. And who has zero idea what scores she bowled when she leaves the lanes.

I think this comes from being in a very competitive career for so long. Public Accounting at the levels I 'played' is VERY competitive...and I found the whole thing to be really un-fun.

Just last weekend i was at an annual trading card game tournament and finished with 2 wins against 5 losses in the main event (and one of those "wins" was my opponent not showing up so the refs awarded me the win). Granted.. i didn't take the best tournament deck with me i could but instead played something i had more fun with and i never expected to make it to the finals but i was still pissed i lost so much.
First 3 games were very bad matchups because they were strong in my areas of weakness and they steamrolled me.

Next day at the side event it didn't go much better so at the end of the weekend my morale was low.. i know it's only a game with colored cards and i don't build my life around them but damn.. a little success would have been nice.

We have a player in our playgroup though who can be a real ass when he loses.. especially to someone he considers to be beneath him in gaming skill. If chance happens and that player defeats him by having luck or a gamble paid off he will be pissed to no end and act out like a child sometimes.. it sometimes got so bad that i was close to packing it up on gaming night and giving him a piece of my mind (especially if he lets it out on his girlfriend.. beats me how she can take this for 8 years now.. i'd have dumped his ass long ago).
