BluRay set vs Directors cut DVD's

The credits for my Blu-ray edition of The Search for Spock are window-boxed. They roll inward from the sides as the focus moves to Genesis. I have a PS4 plugged into a 50" Vizio 4K TV.

Well, this is embarrassing... :alienblush: :( :sigh:

It turns out that my copy of ST3 does have windowboxed credits. I just forgot that I had my TV on ZOOM mode when I was investigating this!

(Before I checked my ST3 blu, I'd been watching a letterboxed DVD - non-anamorphic - and I totally forgot to turn off zoom when I was done.)

Anyway...mea culpa. :(

I don't care for the Special Edition/Director's cuts much at all. However, the transfers for the blurays were very poorly done and obviously on the cheap.

Anyway, thanks for clearing this up! You almost made me order the newer standalone disc to find out if they had really corrected the framing ... ;)

Still, though, I'm inclined to wonder...what's the big deal? It's just the credits. It's not as if the film itself is affected. So in this case, does a couple of minutes of windowboxing really matter?

I think I'll wait and see if Paramount gets its act together with the next release. So since rewarding them for shoddy work. My DVDs are fine for now. Besides I've been eying the 50" plus TVs. May wait for 4k's to come down some more first.

I got a 50" Vizio 4K for $698 last week. :techman:

I'll be surprised if we don't see a new release, of at least the films, for the 50th anniversary. I truly hope (but am not holding my breath) they do some excellent new extras and maybe, just maybe, all three versions of TMP in a nice box set.

On its own, no. In conjunction with the lazy transfers, heavily overused digital noise reduction and strange color timing on TWOK, it's not a good sign for the effort that went into most of the box set.

Same here. I'm hanging on to my cash and my 2003 DVD 1-10 box set with the DE of TMP & TWOK in.

I still have my copies of the TMP & TWOK DEs on DVD. In the last year, I did buy a digital download of TMP DE, because my DVD was in storage.
