BluRay set vs Directors cut DVD's

I'm trying to decide if the BluRay set of 1 - 6 are worth it. I've read reviews that says they botched the picture and sound on the BluRays. So for picture and sound quality only, is the BluRay set worth the money?

They aren't very expensive any more, so I would say for the 'resolution' alone, yes they are worth it. Especially if you are watching on a screen or projected image larger than 42"

The color timing for ST II is off, as I've repeated often. Way too cold/blue esp for the FX shots

I think the Blu-ray's are worth it compared to the DVD's. But the Blu-ray's are solely the theatrical cuts.

It's worth it for the theatrical TMP alone!

That being said, TWOK is too blue and TSFS has pillarboxed opening credits. People say that the massively applied DNR is ruining everything, but I guess that depends on how you are watching the movies. I only have a 32" flatscreen, and I don't have any complaints. It might become more of a problem the bigger a tv set you have.

If you prefer the Directors Cuts of TWOK and TUC, they are available in HD on iTunes ... they seem to be the same transfer that has been used for the Directors Cut DVDs.

I paid $30 for them on Amazon. Wouldn't spend any more on it; did it that way so I wouldn't feel too-ripped off if they do remaster all of the films.

@Oso, I'm watching the TSFS blu-ray right now, and the credits are entirely normal - not 'pillarboxed.' Are you sure the settings on your BR player are correct?

I bought the first six for $61 back in 2010. I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of them.

Absolutely sure. The picture is slowly getting smaller the moment Spock says "These are the continuing voyages of the starship Enterprise", and it's getting back to normal right after the credits when the Enterprise is flying into the picture. It wasn't like that on the DVDs!

This has been talked about a lot here on this board, I'm surprised you didn't know. Can you check your BD again? If there is a BD out there that has the credits framed correctly, I'm gonna get it!

^ Trust me, I checked. I noticed absolutely nothing unusual about the framing on the Blu-Ray. The only 'boxing' was the normal 2.35:1 aspect ratio - only black bars are on the top and bottom, as it should be.

Now that's strange ... I have black bars on the sides as well during the opening credits, just as many others do. There have been various discussions about that here.

Which edition do you have? Standalone release or box set? US or UK or whatever country?

Which box set, and when did you buy it?

Can anyone confirm that there is a BluRay without pillarboxed opening credits out there?

Oso, I saw TSFS in the theater and VHS. I'm pretty sure the opening sequence in the original release had the pillarbox your're referring to. At least when you see the funeral. I don't recall how far into the opening it extended.

The flashbacks to TWOK have always been pillarboxed, but not the actual opening credits. The DVDs (both the barebones and the special edition) have the original, non pillarboxed opening credits.

^ I just did! :scream:

He's asking for confirmation. In other words, he wanted to know if anyone else has the same "non windowboxing" you apparently have.

I can't, mine also windowboxes. I don't get why they did that. They don't seem to be doing anything but cutting off the sides of the image. The rest of the image remains constant. They're n ot shrinking it to make more room for credits. Ugh.

I would just watch the DVDs, but the DVD credits of the movie are a little screwed up, timing wise. The Blu-Ray corrects the problem, but adds windowboxing.

From a review at High Def Digest:

"Aside from the opening credits, which are windowboxed to an aspect ratio of approximately 2:1, the majority of the movie is presented at the 2.35:1 theatrical ratio."

Unless, they fixed it and put these in the newer pressings without mentioning it....

Exactly, no offense intended! I'm just trying to find out when exactly they could have replaced the movie with a correct pressing.

@Mr. Laser Beam: When did you buy the box set? Back when it came out, or later?

I bought the same box back in 2009, which I gave away a few months later when I bought the "Legends Of The Final Frontier Collection". Both are from the UK and both have the windowboxed opening credits.

I wonder if they have corrected the colour "correction" in TWOK as well ... :D

Edit: Here are two screenshots from TrekCore to illustrate the windowboxing issue:

And here you can clearly see the black bars on the sides: http://movies.trekcore.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=400&page=2
