Blue Ray Phaser

Pretty nice work and the end result looks good, even though it does seem a little weak.

Looks just right for cutting through a bulkhead to get at the door circuits.

I think it's great that we've come far enough to be able to fit a relatively powerful laser into the phaser 2 shell. I bet if you bumped up the power a little more you could pop a ballon with it.

I want to know where he got a good-quality Phaser II toy for $30 bucks that looked that good. I haven't been able to find them anywhere and the "prop" repro's are out-of-hand price-wise.

You think so?
That phaser I on top looks very suspect. It looks like the Playmates one.
I have an Art Asylum one that's more accurate and cost $25.
But yeah, that would be a cool real product. I wonder how dangerous that beam is to the eyes though?

I can't find the Art Asylum one, and I don't see it on their site anymore. Shame really.

I don't know how powerful the blu-ray laser diode is, but I have up-powered some green-laser diodes and while I burned it out, I was able to get make one of the diodes powerful enough to burn a hole in a Aluminum can using a car battery as the power-source. Not exactly portable though.

I would not aim it anywhere near anyone's eyes even before I ramped up the power.

My hats off to you - very nicely done. I wouldn't overestimate the intelligence of every viewer though -- I would strongly recommend adding a safety warning to the video because some idiot will make this and start pointing it at people. Most sane people will just make it for display purposes, but you'll have those who want it for roleplaying and those lasers are far more powerful than those in laser pointers. Many recently-manufactured laser pointers have actually had the power cranked down a bit because they're popular with dog and cat owners to exercise their pets (cats in particular love chasing the beam) and there were eye concerns as well. But the laser inside a PS3 has been designed to never be used outside of its protective casing, so there is some danger here.

Cheers!

Alex

Yes as long as the exterior looks correct.

Which it doesn't. All that work and then leaving the "emitter" tip off the phaser? If it somehow interfered with the laser light, maybe drilling a hole through the middle would work.

Great job but a few points taken off for being "incomplete."

No, but could be very useful the next time someone cuts you off in traffic! :bolian:

Garibaldi O'brien, you will be getting a credit card number from me by PM. I assume a $10,000 limit will be enough?
