Blizzard, You Fail

... I recall now why I stopped posting threads when I have complaints about privacy issues ...

I understand your concern on a general level; however the title of the thread is a bit disingenuous and I think it's tainted the discussion a bit. Why don't you make a post about your other privacy concerns, since that's a subject that's relevant to most of us and certainly worthy of discussion? It could even be in this thread, we can just take it in a different direction.

I mentioned in TNZ that I had recently deactivated my Facebook account. Some of this was due to privacy issues, although that was only one of the factors involved.

You've already admitted that the thread title is disingenuous, as Blizzard had nothing to do with this particular incident, and now you're upset that people are disagreeing with you as to the implications of it. If you want to talk about privacy in the 21st century, start a thread about it -- but to try and sneak such a discussion through the back door, and then complain when people discuss the thread topic that you actually did bring up, doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

So in the interest of discussing online privacy issues, I'm given to understand that this website will scare the crap out of you if you're an American.

Hehe, only found 2 people with my name in the U.S. Neither one of them me.

It's ironic that people concerned about privacy email the ESRB to warn them about this in turn have theirs somewhat violated by the ESRB themselves. It's not the same though. An email address by itself doesn't mean much necessarily. I've got several, only one of which even remotely resembles my name and it doesn't even tell you that much.

Giving out a full first and last name is not the same as an email address though. And even knowing that much is not the threat it is sometimes made out to be (with obvious exception), it's enough to worry some people genuinely. I used that spokeo website for instance. It found two people in my city with the same name. Different middle names but identical in other ways.

Enough so in fact you could confuse me with them. Similar age, ethnicity and gave the generic information probable to any number of people with a given background. It did get wrong my marital status, my residency history, education background and an number of other factors that could easily lead someone to mistake me for the other guy and vice versa if you did not personally know either one of us or just had a name to go on and little else.

So assuming that one of us was using this Real ID or similar privacy-invading "features," you could get the wrong person. If the person(s) looking for information on one of us got the wrong one, you could imagine the problem that would be. Especially if they were intent on doing harm or committing some other criminal act.

what i find most disgusting about this are the websites that popped up and started posting the personal information of the Blizzard employees and their spouses/significant others. most people listed had nothing to do with the change. it sickened me.

It was a bit unfair, yes, but they were the messengers bringing that insane idea to the people. Whether their fault or not, they put themselves in the line of fire. And you can't argue with the results... the point was made emphatically.

Get the pediatrician!

how are they the messengers? when is some producer's girlfriend, or the ceo's sister a messenger? how are they in the line of fire?

how are the employees in the line of fire? again, who knows if the people they singled out had anything to do with the choice.

as for the results. i'd like to think that those tactics had no bearing on blizzards decision (blizzard employee names have been public for quite some time). angry fans are probably part of the reason blizzard has a gated campus and security guards.

in the end, i just have to constantly remind myself that those "fans" are a very small subset of the blizzard fanbase.

"Unfair," my ass. Try illegal. They're basically inciting stalking and harassment against people who have done nothing to deserve it.

I'm on there, but the address information is fifteen years out of date.
