Blade Runner.....SPOILERS

I often wonder what drives the film companies to interfere so much. Well I know it's a desire to make more money but whoever it was who decided to meddle with Blade Runner I wonder if he kept his job, whether he regretted sabotaging an all-time classic, whether he has a brain, etc. If it had been left to Ridley Scott I wonder if it would have been a success on its release. Alien3 was another one destroyed by fools.

^Fear of loosing money I should think. The problem however is that while quite a few good creative people know exactly how to make business decisions, not many good business people know how to make a good creative decision and thus shoddy fiddling ensues.

This makes me want to watch BR again.

Maybe tonight. I promised myself i'd watch the Dangerous Days documentary before I watch the film again though...

Ach, 3 1/2 hours!

OK, i'll put that on the backburner...

On an unrelated topic I watched a british film last night that had some very clear Blade Runner influences, called Franklyn. I can't entirely recommend it, as the plot was quite weak and obvious, but the cast was very good, the dialogue was very well written and parts of it looked fantastic.

... clicks off to check...

I watched the international version a couple of weeks ago (it's basically the same film as the theatrical version, with a bit more violence). I had heard how terrible Deckard's narration was, but I didn't believe it until hearing it for myself. There have always been those defenders of it that I've wanted to believe-- Guillermo Del Toro says the only version he watches has the voice over on the DVD--so I was shocked at how terrible it was.

Not only is the writing bad (not one line that I remember is close to redeemable), but Ford's delivery isn't even in the tone of the character we see on screen. I'd go as far to say that the addition of the narration takes a film which I often hold as my favorite film of all time and turns it into one I don't ever want to see again. How some studio executive (or, anyone) could have watched this version and signed off on it stuns me. What stupidity. Thank (diety of choice here) we have the Final Cut.

Ford was right, it's a terrible ending.

It was much better to leave questions unanswered.

The scene is a substantial break from the tone of the film, and is really out of left field. "Racheal was special, no termination date" Come on!

if there is anything about Blade Runner I dislike, It's the revelation about Deckard being a replicant. I've always felt it was a cheap way to shoehorn a "big twist ending" into the story. It works in that way, but in the process guts the story of it major theme of a man who learns humanity and the precious, fragile nature of life.

Further, It just never made sense as deckard constantly was beaten to a pulp by the replicants.

These are all minor complaints though, It's still my Favorite Science Fiction Film:techman:

that was the epitome of cheapness
