Blade Runner prequels/sequels planned!

Yeah, I agree - no need to touch this film at all. No prequels, sequels, or remakes required.

I find it funny that the Total Recall tv show from a while back was actually a Blade Runner tv show in everything but name.

Yay, even more unoriginal shit. The plan of torturing us with an Alien prequel was thankfully sabotaged, now they attempt it with Blade Runner.

KW Jeter wrote three Blade Runner sequel novels, not one of which came close to remotely justifying its existence.

Just leave it be.

My reaction is best summed up as follows:

Just two questions:
1. Why?
It's safer than betting big bucks on original material.

2. What for?
Money.

Yea, when a sequel to Tron was announced I was like "Uh, why?" Tron wasn't exactly hugely popular (a lot like Blade Runner) and wasn't well regarded by the mainstream. I believe both movies made around the same amount of money (somewhere between $25-$35mil) in the early 80s.

The Tron Sequel cost over $150mil to make, but made back it's production costs from the US gross and then worldwide gross added another $200m+ to the mix. When all is said and done with DVD/Blu-Ray sales I'm thinking they'll make back 3 times the costs of the movie.

So even movies that didn't have great mainstream appeal in the early 80s if a studio is willing to sink money and promotion into a sequel/remake/whatever now seems to be a way to make money.

Maybe we'll get some amazing science fiction movies and tv shows?

And if they suck, it's not like they will erase the existence of the original.

What's the problem?

After the great Tron sequel, I would be looking forward to this one, as long as they don´t touch the original - which, according to the article, thankfully isn´t an option. But they will definitaly have a really hard time capturing the story, the look and the atmosphere of the original. But I´d love to see Rutger in a cameo...

Justin Beiber is Rick Deckard Jr. in... The Blade Runner Diaries, coming this fall to The CW!

My thoughts exactly. I'm going to keep an open mind about this one. Besides, everything is just ideas right now. No scripts, cast etc. It may never go anywhere.

Yup, put me in this camp.

Why not let them have a go at it? Completely original projects are risky; at least with a known and successful brand/franchise you will have money allocated to sci-fi type projects that otherwise would likely be spent on genres that I'm less likely to be interested in.
