Blade Runner prequels/sequels planned!

I saw this the other day and I genuinely cringed. Blade Runner is my favorite film of all time and I see absolutely no reason to make a sequel, prequel, miniseries, megaseries, or anything else. People in this thread keep asking "why not?" but I have to ask "why?" Is there some great need to see a continuation of this story 30 years later? I much rather see film adaptations of other science-fiction classics like Rendezvous with Rama, The Foundation Trilogy, and as already mentioned, 2061 and 3001, not to mention the plethora of other Dick stories that haven't been touched upon yet.

I'm sure you've all read this fascinating article, "The Day the Movies Died", but I'm providing a link for those of you who haven't yet.

That's nothing new at all. Do you realise how many "great films" back in the early-to-mid-20th Century were adaptations? Gone With the Wind, Ben-Hur, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Maltese Falcon, Tom Jones, The Wizard of Oz, The Godfather -- all based on books. Casablanca, The Sound of Music, West Side Story -- based on plays. Lawrence of Arabia, Mutiny on the Bounty, Patton -- based on true events, or on books about true events. Hollywood has never been original.

Hollywood may never have been inclined towards originality, but it has also never been so inclined to producing long-running big budget film series until recently (though the trend has been slowly brewing since sequels were made to Star Wars and Jaws). Andy Hardy and Charlie Chan, which are sure to be brought up again, were not A-pictures.

Actually, yes, it's new. Have you read the article? The movies you're talking about are all based on books for grown-ups. These days, movies are specifically targeted at easily bored male teenagers, and more and more, Hollywood is producing movies based on pre-existing, familiar material, simple formulas, anything that feels safe.

I have no problem with prequels or sequels to Blade Runner.

I really enjoyed BOOM!'s prequel mini-series to Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? -- Dust to Dust. I thought Chris Roberson did a very good job of evoking the PKD milieu, and even though it's a story based on the novel, this story could work without great difficulty within the world of Blade Runner.

And sequels don't bother me, either. I didn't mind K.W. Jeter's work at all. Soldier with Kurt Russell didn't bother me. The Westwood computer game didn't bother me, either. Hell, I'd love to write a Predator story set in the world of Blade Runner.

Honestly, the world of Blade Runner is big enough and interesting enough for other stories. And, no matter what happens, the DVD of Blade Runner, whichever version you want, will still be there, inviolate.
