Bits that amuse you...

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Obviously there's a lot of funny bits in the films but I've always chuckled at the part in UDC where Scotty finds the assassins suits. He's sat at the table (he's chief engineer remember) looking at what is basically a picture of the enterprise, nothing else, just that, lol. Every time I see the film I envisage some crayons just out of shot and he's actually just colouring in, this picture really is that basic!

Any bits that make you guys chuckle for the wrong reasons...?

When we watched Trek VI in the theatre, the scene where Chekov looked at the slide of the Klingon blood in the transporter room came up. Chekov held it right up to his face. My friend Ryan said "Look, Chekov is holding it backwards." Then, in a Chekov voice he said "It's a giant eye." I always laugh at that scene now.

TMP, when McCoy shows up with regular hair, but bushy beard, leisure suit and swinger's medallion, I chuckle to myself too since he looks so ridiculous.

In ST III the powder blue security uniforms with the Jetsons style hats always make me whince. To think that's the best they could have in the 23rd century no wonder the guards were so bitter

If you look closely, there are red marks, mostly Xs, various places on the hull...

... like he's marking or checking off things.

The 'do not use in spacedock' on the loo in the brig in STV. Nice attention to detail.

...It's reassuring to know Scotty has made sure the suits are not being hidden at either the forward or the aft end of the starboard nacelle, or the forward third of the portside one. Now, all he has to do is check the forward and aft ends of the port nacelle, and the middle part of the starboard one! :D

What if anything were TPTB thinking when drawing those red marks? Funnily enough, the very area where the suits are being kept, the officers' lounge aft of the bridge (the best if imperfect match for the cool curvy windows), already appears to sport two crosses...

To do the usual in-universe explanation dance and song, we could argue that Scotty had some information on suspicious, possibly unauthorized (but probably merely careless and ill reported) openings of maintenance hatches or ejection chutes or other potential means of disposal on various locations of the ship in the past X hours, and was crossing out those one by one. Ya know, a slash for a suspicious location, a backslash across it for a checked-out one.

Plenty of places inside a nacelle for incinerating the evidence, I gather. Or in the "impulse deflection crystal" area that is also marked. And the one cross in the center of the saucer could be for the airlock behind the bridge. The other saucer locations might be waste disposal chutes or something like that.

Out of curiosity, how do those red marks line up with the phaser hits from say, TWOK or TSFS? Or, perhaps later in TUC itself, during the attack at the end?

..The hits on a completely different starship? One lost a decade before? ;)

Not too well. We see a starboard side view of the ship here, and a top view with markings predominantly on the starboard side. But all the action in ST2 was with the port side of the model(s), and even the bridge "damage report" display in that movie showed precious little happening on the starboard flank of the saucer. There's something on the starboard side of the secondary hull there, though. If you squint a lot, and selectively ignore some things, you could pretend to see a correlation.

ST3 shows such damage in "physical" form, compensating for the final ST2 scene where the damage was blatantly missing:

The starboard nacelle tip damage and the forward secondary hull damage could be said to coarsely match Scotty's red marks. The aft secondary hull damage is much farther aft than the mark, though. And the match with the ST2 diagram is approximate at best, too. Funnily enough, the hits from Kruge's (stun/capture?) torpedoes seem to have left no mark!

Or, perhaps later in TUC itself, during the attack at the end?
Saucer portside damage isn't marked; marks for starboard damage don't match perfectly, but two of the crosses are sort of in the ballpark.

So Scotty is being about 50% prescient... The expected track record for yer regular charlatan, I guess.

This is why I love Star Trek fandom. And no, that's not a knock, but a genuine sentiment :)
