Big questions left unanswered

WeAreTheBorg

Vice Admiral
Admiral
1) Walt? Special?

2) The medical experiments by the others

3) The button

4) What exactly the light/electromagnet stuff was

5) who built all that and where did Jacob's mom come from?

6) WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALT!!!

Any others?

What is the Light?

How is the island able to time travel and move?

Who built the cork?

What was Jacobs mom?

If LOST, Heroes and BSG has taught us anything is--stop with the complex mythology since they make it a big deal and then look all astonished when the fans are disappointed when they drop it or incoherently wrap it up.

If you don't want to mess with it then don't-frankly I'm tired of these big complex mythology series--just get back to basics--balance character and plot and quit playing mindgames with the audience. Perfect example of a good series like this DS9--had a large cast, had epic storytelling but kept the core material manageable without letting it overshadow the characters.

As for unanswered questions--I've listed a bunch multiple times in multiple threads over the last few weeks but:

Why a Protector?
How did he become Smoke?
Who was Mother?
How did the wheel move the island?
Why did Jacob commandeer Horace's cabin?
Who really was Dharma?
Who was Alvar Hanso?
Why the 481516 sequence in the Hatch?
Why was Desmond EM proof?
Why did Richard befriend young Ben?
What was up with the spring and Sayid?

3) The button

What don't we know about the button? That was explained in Season 5.

Was it? My memory is spotty a times but I don't think it was ever really explained. Like, why hieroglyphics popped up when the countdown went past zero, and why the numbers were used as the code.... which brings me to the big one I forgot about that was on my mind.... what the hell do the numbers mean?

OH and what was the disease all about? Did Sayid get it and if so how? Did Claire get it or was she just a bit psycho?

Yeah, I would have liked some answers about the disease since it sort of became important again at the beginning of the season.

You are right it wasn't ever answered or what the glyphs meant .

I'm gonna' steal my post from another thread: It was obvious to me at the end of season 2 that the writers couldn't resolve all the "mysteries" they were inventing. It was all questions and no answers. I don't think they ever had a real plan from the beginning. If they did in never showed up in a narrative of the show.

So, I was never expecting them to answer everything, and I expected plenty of contradictions when they tried to. But they seemed to go a different way by not bothering to explain most of it. So in a real way they kind of insulted and wasted the time of the audience who thought all the strangeness would be explained in the end.

Well, they did explain why the button was being pushed. Of course, there was Egyptian stuff all over the Island that was never explained, not just in the Hatch.

But this was built in to the system Dharma apparently built. And they coded the numbers into the computer too.

Here's a random and small question: where did Daniel get the last name Faraday? His mom's name is Hawking, and his dad's name is Widmore.

Most of the questions listed here were answered at some point in the show, you just have to put stuff together. I've neither the time nor the inclination to explain the answers tonight but maybe tomorrow.

I have a feeling that was adressed. From an outside perspective, both Hawking and Faraday are names of famous physicists, as for where Faraday comes from within the story, I don't recall but I seem to remember mention of the reason.

Oh come on... nothing came close to explaining most of them. I mean, you could extrapolate the ending to explain the light and the nature of the island or whatever, but Walt? The others medical experiments? The numbers? The disease? Untouched.

Walt was psychic and the Others took an interest in him. The medical experiements were done to see why women can't get pregnant (they couldn't get pregnant because of the Incident). I was satisfied with what we got on the numbers...

The disease? You mean the sickness? Smoke monster did that sometimes while other times the time barrier around the Island got people sick.

I'd hardly call what you provided satisfying or even half-realized answers. No, WeAretheBorg is right that there was a lot of unanswered questions and there is no amount of mental gymnastics that will alter that fundamental fact.

The series did answer quite a few but at the end of the day we didn't get as many answered as was raised.

I'm at the point now I'm just letting it go and over it. It hurts the series and tarnishes it but the show cast a wide enough net that its stronger areas should help compensate for the mythology department to some degree.

Walt had gifts. Like how Hurley and Miles could communicate with dead people. Those powers weren't explained either, and nobody seems to mind.
