big effin volcano eruption

If you're in the right place at the right (wrong?) time you can see similar eruptions on Earth. The Laki eruption in 1783 in Iceland was produced from a 25 km long fissure - and that is tiny in comparison to large igneous provinces from the ancient past like the Columbia flood basalts or Siberian traps. I also read that the highest documented lava fountain is 1 mile in height and occurred in 1986 on Okinawa (Japan).

There was a volcano that erupted somewhere in New Zealand recently.

I wasn't paying attention, though. (But it wasn't here in Wellington.)

Io is rather well known for it's volcanoes - if I remember rightly it's proximity to the huge gravitational field of Jupiter ensures that it's the most volcanically active body in the entire solar system. Not the sort of place you want to be visiting for a holiday ;) although those photos are rather impressive......

Yeah, Ruapehu blew it's top again. The last time was in 1997, at least I suppose it means the big one won't be coming any time soon.

If you think that's something, wait until yellowstone erupts. Wait a minute, I really don't hope I'm around to see that.

The Yellowstone "supervolcano"? Yeah... That'd both be cool and pretty damn devestating at the same time.

Can you imagine the kind of shit storm we'd be in for if another Krakatoa sized volcano or larger caused another "year without winter?"
