Big announcement?

OK, I said it was beyond pathetic to pretend that a new show isn't big news ...
I don't consider it big news. A new show alone certainly isn't, those get announced and produced all the time.
That leaves the Doctor Who connection and so far that's only a building ... so what?

Coal Hill School? Pfft. That's as exciting as a show taking place in the store that used to employ Rose. Why should I care?

While it's not what I'd hoped for, it may be O.K. - not hopeful though. Teenagers ? I've got one - they're horrible !

Wonder if any of the Sarah Jane cast might guest ?

You know what; I doubt I'll be watching just like I didn't watch TSJA but watching people act like big babies over not getting some imaginary spinoff that they've deluded themselves into thinking they're entitled to is pretty sad. Not everything has to be made for your (that's a general "your" not you specifically) benefit to have worth.

Yes, I needed that clarifying. Thanks.

Just for the sake of clarity, your opinion's bloody well shared by me! :techman:

The SJA was genuinely good though, even beyond Lis Sladen it was better than it had any right to be.

In fact in my dreams I'm considering that, technically, Rani or Clyde could be old enough (in universe) to be newly qualified teachers.... won't happen of course but a fan can dream.

Probably not a good sign when people are talking more about the announcement itself rather than what was announced. I wonder whether being a spinoff of Who is even a positive for this show. Like if BBC had just announced "Famed YA author to create new TV series" might have gotten more buzz.

This is probably not anywhere yet, but does anyone know if it will be on BBCAmerica?

According to Patrick Ness' Twitter it will air in America (the dude is seriously active on Twitter from the look of it or Twittuh as it sounds in The Magician's Apprentice).

They say it will air on BBC3 and BBC America has shown other BBC3 series like In The Flesh and The Fades. Not sure what the tone of this will be like but it seems in the right ballpark.

Before I learned about this new show, I had been reading about Assassination Classroom. It is a manga, and later anime and film, from Japan. According to Wikipedia,

The Earth is threatened by a powerful creature who destroyed 70% of the Moon with its power, rendering into the shape of a crescent moon forever. The creature claims that within a year, Earth will also be destroyed by him, but he offers mankind a chance to avert this fate. In class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School, he starts working as a homeroom teacher where he teaches his students not only regular subjects, but the ways of assassination. The Japanese government promises a reward of ¥10 billion (i.e. 100 million USD) to whomever among the students succeeds in killing the teacher, whom they have named "Koro Sensei" (殺せんせー Korosensē?, a pun on korosenai (殺せない, unkillable) and sensei (先生, teacher)). However, this has proven to be an almost impossible task, as not only does he have several superpowers at his disposal, including the capacity of moving at Mach 20, but he is also the best teacher they've ever had.

I find this to be more palatable than a series of eight stand-alone episodes.

I only got this now. I'm indifferent about it. I liked the SJA, which I watched years later and would not mind a renewal of something like that although I don't wait for it.

As for the discussion in the thread here: I wouldn't call that "massive" either but I have stopped believing (or even listening) to doctor who announcements since NU series 6.

Very often there is hardly anything behind it anyway. How often did they announce that Coleman was leaving the show. Right before or after a season start? To me it's the real-life extension of what I see on the screen: feeding the expectations of the audience but never a real resolution. Like with the death of the doctor or the Silence etc.

Honestly, the news that John Hurt will be reaturning to his War Doctor role for Big Finish remains a far, far bigger announcement. And relatively MASSIVE, since it also means that Big Finish will explore a territory that has never before been available to them: The Time War.
