Beyond the 5th anniversary

Khan 2.0

Commodore
Commodore
5 years since BEY (or STB) continued the 5 year mission for the 50th anniversary.
5 years since we marvelled at James T and his band of guardians of the federation defeat the evil of the space crazy Edison.
5 years of (some) mourning the 'what if' of Orcis' lost ST3 with Shatner.
5 years out there dealing with the unknowns of STXIV ..until it looks like it will finally happen summer 2023 (longest gap for a Trek movie).
5 years since this:

Thanks for sharing.
I watched this movie the day after I moved from Ireland to England. It would've been the first Trek movie to watch with my bestie but we were together in spirit.

Absolutely loved the trailer soundtracks. Specifically "Twilight" by Hi-Finesse.

It pains me to this day that a) trailer music is not part of a movie soundtrack album, and b) neither Eaglemoss nor another company has brought out the new Enterprise-A model.

As a fan of ENT, I love how seamlessly the Franklin and its crew backstory fits into the then-established canon. Nowadays, I rewatch ENT: "First Flight" and Beyond in a row. Also including a nod to VOY with Commodore Paris is appreciated.

The beginning of the movie, before the main plot kicks off, made me wish for it to be a Trek series instead of a movie series.

I'm going to admit it - Insurrection and Beyond are my top two Trek movies of all time.

I think that's a bit more accurate ;)

Yep, the Shatner ship sailed about 30 years ago. After STVI, there was no reason for him to reprise Kirk, and he was losing the look and the Kirk voice. Bringing back Nimoy for the trilogy was the way to go, because (a) Vulcans live very long lives, (b) it was relevant to the plot (Romulans -- he was ambassador), and (c) let's face it: Spock IS and always has been the icon of Star Trek.

No, I'm pretty sure that's just you. :p

absolutely Spock made the most sense.

I'm still curious about that other script... and wasn't there some debate whether there should even be a villain (again) or just some 'force of nature' and more exploration and sense of wonder instead of fights?

I really enjoyed Beyond, but I thought it a step down from ST 2009 and Into Darkness. Still I said at the time I'd be happy if they kept making similar calibre 5-year mission movies forever and I stand by that.

I guess Strange New Worlds has to scratch that itch...

Very solid film; my favourite of the Kelvins. It was perhaps the least-ambitious, though, and I wasn't surprised that it didn't capture nearly as much of the broader audience as its predecessors.

For me it's the best of the Kelvin films.

I really enjoyed the first half hour or so of the movie. I wanted to hang out on the ship with these characters. It felt like Star Trek.

The movie starts to lose me when all the boring obligatory action stuff comes in. And yet another "bad guy" out for revenge or whatever. But overall I enjoyed the film, even if it's not what I want ST to be, and I never re-watch it.

I give it a 6.8 of out 10.

I blame its box office failure on two things: the initial trailer, and STID.

Really good quality traditional star trek film.

I wish the movie had done better at the box office and gotten more attention.

I also hope we see some traces of this cast in the next film even if the Kelvin cast never returns.

Five years already.

While the film was a little frenetic, and Quinto's "Spock Wig" was a little distracting, I loved this film from the moment I saw it. It was a great mix of contemporary blockbuster filmmaking and classic Trek storytelling. For a script dashed out as quickly as it was, there were a lot details and layers which weren't apparent on first viewing. This film is one which truly benefits from repeat viewing. All of the clues are peppered throughout the story.

Chris Pine is insanely good as the Kirk we grew up loving. This is the Kirk I've been waiting for. Seasoned and a little tired, he still has his boyish charm and quick wit. Pine even throws in some Shatnarian pauses and it works.

Jaylah is a joy and a fantastic character.

The Spock/McCoy pairing is perfect. The focus on Kirk, Spock and McCoy was a nice return to the series.

Even though we have seen the Enterprise blown up and badly damaged before, seeing the nacelles ripped from the primary hull and float dead in space was a kick in the gut I hadn't experienced since 1984.

Paramount utterly dropped the ball with the promotion of this film. It deserved a hell of a lot more than it got.

Although I'm really not a fan of any of the Kelvinverse movies, and particularly of Beyond, I'd have loved a Shatner cameo in any of them.

I do, however, realise it probably wasn't a great idea.

Still holds up. The best thing about it? It came out right during the formation of Brexit and the Drumpf stupidities, and everything about Beyond is about overcoming our base, violent proclivities, and moving forward. The multi-cultural Yorktown reinforces it, the makeup of the crew, and of course most of all, the dialogue with Krall and company. I think it's a more relevant film than ever and much more topical than any "classic era" film. Gene Roddenberry would have loved it.

Yes, they actually have a huge connection, that was the message of the movie and was quoted as such by the writers, you cant separate one from the other.
