Beyond and Discovery discussed on TrekFM with David Gerrold
http://trek.fm/axp/39
Never really had some of the criticism from the host, different people look for different things I suppose.

First warp 4 vessel? Not a problem. First Flight covered the first ward 2.5 vessel. We didn't know what the first warp 4 vessel was.

Other stuff? Hmm, host didn't pay much attention to the movie .

Discovery: Retro-stampunk Discovery? It still looks pretty advanced. NASA doesn't have anything like it on the books.

Oh oh, Alec Peters knows what year the show is set. lol Giving Fuller the benefit of the doubt.

Good point: "Locked into a Star Trek future" where the computers interfaces are backwards compared to what we will probably have, Peters tried to update them to a degree for Axanar.

Why does anyone care about Gerrold's thoughts on two projects he has absolutely nothing to do with?

Well I have the same reservations..as I've said I've had some interaction with Gerrold before and I'm not that fond of him personally, but he has to be given his due..if we had to gather 10 people who are alive that have been integral to Trek and it's proliferation Gerrold would be one of them. When Gene picked the team he thought knew ST best (before his lawyer got into the act) Gerrold was one of them. Ironically it's his post TOS non-fiction that accounts for this, not his actual writing on the show.

I find it interesting to hear what some of the older Star Trek talents think of the new movies and show, and of course the gamut of opinions is out there. Surprisingly, I disagree with very little that Gerrold says in this interview and overall even the Axanar stuff isn't annoying--it's actually very measured. It's well worth listening to.

Also I haven't been attempting to tout Gerrold, he just keeps appearing in interesting ways during the 50th anniversary.

Notably, he is not appearing in any association with Discovery. Meyer, yep, Roddenberry's son, yep, Gerrold...phone's not ringing.

What I found interesting was that despite all the negativity with the start-up of STNG, he seemed very eager to work on Discovery, as it's the first time a new writing staff has been assembled in a long time.

I find this all a little sad. His book about writing the episode and World of Star Trek were some of the first nonfiction Trek books I read, and he did indeed make a contribution to the worst seasons of TNG, but the problems weren't because of him. I saw him selling tribbles at Mission New York but failed to approach him because of his cranky online persona and association with those con artists at Axanar. I don't begrudge him selling tribbles --I would too-- but I think in terms of creating he should just stick to his non-Trek projects. That ship has sailed. IMO

Regardless, it's a good podcast episode...and Gerrold has almost nothing but positives to say about new Trek. In fact, the host sounded more like one of the disgruntled posters on this BBS(maybe he WAS!).

Alec Peters is a very shady businessman but he is more of a genuine Trekkie than a lot of people on this board.

I wouldn't rule out a Gerrold script on Discovery in future seasons either.:techman:

I suppose it isn't properly on topic, but this seems like a good enough thread for those interested. The current issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction is a David Gerrold Tribute issue, with several of his stories and some celebration from other science fiction writers. It's F&SF's first authorial tribute issue in a while. And, must be said, Gerrold's been publishing some quite good short stories and novellas, mostly in F&SF, lately.
