Beverly

My own in-head explanation has always been that the Howard women had a long and unusual history of matrilinear naming (the Howard-woman-by-marriage thing doesn't work because Beverly talks about genetic make-up both in terms of eye colour, and of why Ronin picked them). I figured either Paul Howard took his wife's name, or they met at a conference somewhere that was seated alphabetically and the name thing was a coincidence. :)

I would have to watch "Sub Rosa" again to hear the exact line, but maybe Felisa Howard was Beverly's paternal grandmother. She still would have contributed to Beverly's genetic makeup, Crusher's parents would have the same last name, and Felisa and all of the Howard women before her could have been the ones who kept their maiden names.

That would make a certain amount of sense, but when she's talking to Troi about the photograph of herself and her grandmother she says "All the Howard women have had green eyes, except for my mother and me."

Now, perhaps you could argue that Beverly's use of the term "Howard women" includes her mother as a woman who married into the Howard clan, but that's just a whole 'nother level of confusing.

Perhaps there was a greater Howard family group that they consistently married into, which is how they maintained the family name over the centuries. Presumably there are enough Howards in the world that the inbreeding problem isn't an issue. Even if first or second cousins procreate the genetic problem isn't much of an issue.

That has a certain logic to it, but it's kinda bizarre, isn't it?

I think his name was Paul Howard, and I'm pretty sure he died with almost everyone else on Arvada III. If you use the pause button on Season Five's episode "Conundrum" when they show the Senior Crew's bios on screen, you can make out her birthplace, parents names, etc. I could be wrong though!

Wow, I am suprised at how quickly I am forgetting TNG (now that it doesn't air on Spike). What happened at Arvada and who is Felissa?

Does anyone know? Hello!!!! Is anybody out there????

^Was there a plague on Arveda? I don't know if I got that from tv TNG (possibly Arsenal of Freedom) or from fanzines, but somehow, plague and Arveda seems to tie in.:confused:

I answered this above, but I guess it gets kinda lost among the surname discussion. ^_^

There isn't any canonical information on what happened on Arveda III. All we know is that Picard's heard of it and considers it "a terrible tragedy", and that at some point "the medical supplies ran out" which is why Felisa Howard had to learn herbal remedies. [Arsenal of Freedom]

I can't find any "official" information in any companion books that says anything more about it than that.

It's a pity they didn't do more with this. It could have been explained as Bev's reason for becoming a doctor. Also might have made a nice scene in Violatiosn.

One might even say that this ties in to how Crusher is always ready to rush in for field medic and disaster relief tasks, while Pulaski preferred to exploit shipboard resources and only attended away missions when specifically requested or even coerced...
