I don't think "Return" takes any drastic new direction with continuity. It is self contained and can fit in between Generations and FC.

No drastic new direction? The very concept is a drastic new direction!

I haven't read it for a while - well I could only manage to force myself through it once - but I was so disappointed with Ship Of The Line.

I was really looking forward to it and in the end it was barely about the TNG crew. The worst bit for me was that the Bozeman crew felt old fashioned for the 20th Century let alone the 24th. Probably the worst Trek book I have ever read.
