Between D and E

Well, the only one really coming to mind now is the short story "Friends With the Sparrows" in "The Sky's the Limit". It's a Data story, but featuring Picard, Troi and La Forge too. Data is sent on a diplomatic mission to the Tamarians, while learning how to cope with that troublesome emotion chip. I would definitely recommend the story, but of course the only problem is its length; you might be wanting full novels.
Although I am awaiting it's publication in hard copy so haven't read it yet, I ahve it on good authority though that the Slings and Arrows series of e-books published in late 2007 and early 2008 focuses on this timeframe.
Peter David's Imzadi II covers the months immediately after the destruction of the E-D, and Diane Carey's Ship of the Line covers the time leading up to the launch of the E-E.
There's also William Shatner's The Return, which takes things in a decidedly different direction from the rest of the fictional continuity.

I was under the impression it covered the first year on the E?
That's right. It's not between the D and the E, it's between the launch of the E and First Contact.
Aside from "Friends With the Sparrows," the book timeline in Voyages of the Imagination lists the following as dealing with TNG characters between the D and E (not counting the surprising number of Strange New Worlds stories set right around the end of GEN):

Diane Carey's The Way of the Warrior novelization goes into Worf's activities after the Enterprise-D's crash, more than the episode did as I recall. (There were some scenes set in the Klingon monastary, for instance.)
Well, this is all down to personal preference, of course, but I'd recommend staying far away from Ship of the Line. It verges beyond the realm of what's believable in many different ways, and contains an awful lot of authorial self-indulgence regarding Carey's fondness for all things nautical (and I say that as a fan of several of her novels).
To clarify, my story "Terra Tonight" is really a Scotty story, not about the TNG crew. And my earlier story "Full Circle" is one of those uncounted surprising number of end of GEN stories, but, again, is not a TNG crew story. It features Scotty and Harriman.

^Yeah but there is a post count/time limit on when that starts appearing. I'm not 100% sure what those exact points are, but it's possible Karnbeln is too new or has too few posts to be able to delete.
I rather liked 'Ship of the Line' even though it was kinda OOC for some of the cast. I've read worse, tho. *lol*
As far as I'm concerned, SOTL was pretty good--with the exception of the scene where Picard decides to drop the diplomatic route and go all Kirk-like with Gul Madred.
In this case, it seems that Carey is going just a bit too far in indulging her love of all things Kirk....
Still, it WAS somewhat rewarding to have Picard say to Madred, "Oh, by the way...How many lights do you see up there?"

Personally, I don't see anything particularly wrong with the nautical stuff. Recall Picard's nostalgic take on the sea in GEN....
In this case, it seems that Carey is going just a bit too far in indulging her love of all things Kirk....

Didn't Shatner's sequal to "Return" imply that the Borg attack in FC was in retaliation for Kirk and Picard blowin' Borg Prime to kingdom come?
