Betazed Telepathic Abilities

Well, there were those times when Troi could tell that somebody they were communicating with on another ship was lying. And in NEM she telepathically detected the Reman Viceroy on the Scimitar, from the Enterprise bridge.

Kor
This seems to be such an immense strategic advantage that it makes one wonder why not every ship has a member of some telepathic species on the bridge.

I suppose an empath like Deanna Troi or a quarter Betazoid could still communicate telepathically even if reading minds isn't in their grasp?

With a non-telepath, even - she seems able to say tele-hello to Riker in "Encounter at Farpoint". I guess it takes intimacy, but we don't know of what sort. Does it suffice to simply spend a lot of time together? To open one's mind to the other somehow? To exchange something more concrete, such as fluids or bits of internal tissue?

Riker apparently had to do special exercises to learn this trick, since Troi telepathically asks him if he remembers how to do it. Then again, she never receives a proper answer... Perhaps Troi is capable of sending, but Riker isn't receiving anything much.

We could argue it's a bit of artistic license: Deanna is able to trigger nothing but a warm feeling in Will, yet it manifests to the audience as these English words.

In any case, Deanna and Lwaxana can have effortless telepathic dialogue between themselves, including lines that Deanna "speaks" and Lwaxana "hears" but also vice versa. Supposedly, it could be partially due to Lwaxana sending with special vehemence. Or then Deanna can read Betazoid minds as well as any Betazoid, but not other kinds of minds. We get no real evidence that she'd ever actually read Will's thoughts.

Just a thought...

In Larry Niven's Gil the Arm series, Gil's telekenetic ability was line of sight. As long as he could see his "target" he could manipulate it. This included clear video images. If the feed was fuzzy or static, no dice, but if it looked like he could reach into the screen, we'll, then, he could.

Maybe Deanna or Betazoids are like that?

Oh, and range between starship would be thousands of kilometers. Geosync orbit is 35, 786 km. So if Deanna can sense or feel anyone from orbit, then that's tens of thousands of km.

Then again, Trek ships basically never go for geosynchronous. For one thing, the apparent size of the planet below in the relevant establishing visuals suggests just a couple of thousand klicks. For another, the ship is always moving in relation to the planet (especially in those eps where they speak of "stationary" or "synchronous" positioning!)...

The one time Kirk did a natural geosynchronous was at Excalbia in "Savage Curtain". Didn't help against Excalbian telepathy, FWIW.

Also in the FWIW category, Lwaxana in TNG "Dark Page" specifies that the Betazoids do their telepathy by exchanging words, as opposed to the Cairn with whom she's having tough time liaising, as they exchange images. The basic concept of telepathy coming in different, rather fundamentally incompatible variants is an attractive one, but apparently a determined Betazoid can cross variant and species borders.

Has it ever been canonically (or beta canonically) established as to what distance Betazed telepathic abilities can work? I ask as I’m writing a fanfic with a part Betazed original character (Maternal grandmother was Betazed).

Encounter @ Farpoint, as well as a few snippets from season mono*, do say she can read minds but not contact or manipulate them... apart from that one time she telepathically gave a heads-up to Riker... E@F actually showed some proper character potential as, without Troi, they would never have figured out that the station was a giant seafood delicacy with big lasers that can produce buckets full of apples out of thin air. Which sounds silly, but Troi's abilities with non-humanoid life forms SHOULD have been a robust boon to this show, but while I agree not every week can have nonhumanoid and incorporeal aliens, 90% of the time she just parrots "Cap'n, I sense the obvious". Marina got a raw deal, but she did so much with so generic dialogue in ways other actors wouldn't be able to make it work at all. Fortunately she would get the occasional bit (e.g. The Ensigns of Command revolving around the tea cup and describing it to other species and so on**) that also show a side of Troi they could have used a lot more often because she marvels in those scenes as well.

But, pretty much, she can read minds of most species, from any distance in space, and communicate full duplex with other Betazoids...

...until nigh on a decade later in "Nemesis", where she can, all of a sudden, send all sorts of thoughts to the Viceroy as a newfound convenient plot-resolvin' feature... thankfully "Nemesis" is so much less than the sum of its parts, or else the next movie would have scribbled her out even worse...

* since a lot of people apparently love revisiting season one just as much as they do gettin' mono, but that's not important right now :P

** it's honestly a superlative scene, and more interesting than half the pew-pew Borg Battles IMHO

"Send thoughts to Viceroy"? Hmm. The plot-significant skill she had there was the ability to tell where Viceroy was. All-new as such, but I could buy the idea of her doing the Oujia Board thing when she's looking for the signs of a mind against a background of utter emptiness. If something, anything, tickles her there, it's bound to be Viceroy, there being no telepaths floating in that vacuum.

That there'd be more of a connection there than usual is likely to be one of 'em "hoist of his own petard" things, with Viceroy having opened a special channel for his special tricks. Intimacy supposedly helped with the talk-to-Will trick; forced intimacy might be of similar help.

What about Sarek & Michael Burnham.

I know they're Father & Daughter, and Michael has a piece of Sarek's Katra within her.

But they can communicate across Light Years due to their special bond.

Don't forget the Viceroy secretly violated Troi's mind with deception by pretending to be Will in her mind.

I wouldn't be surprised if that leaves some form of Psionic trail that she could follow.

Ergo, it was possible for Troi to figure out where the Viceroy was located, even while cloaked.

It's not like cloaking does squat for Psionic powers.

Especially if you gave the offspring the same shot from Plato’s Stepchildren as you pass through the Negative Energy barrier.
They might be as powerful as Jean Grey as "Dark Phoenix" or Professor X & Magneto combined as "Onslaught" levels?

I’d want that kid to maybe also have El-Aurian blood and provide the same shot from Plato’s Stepchildren as you pass through the Negative Energy barrier.
Aren't un-assimilated El-Aurian's rare?

Good luck finding one that will mate with you and provide off-spring.

Section 31:
We’re tired of these “mental people” like Metrons and Organians and Qs.

Oh…and put that Cytherian Barclay brain boost in the mix too. This wunderkind’s our’n.

https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/El-Aurian
In 2293, a group of 415 El-Aurian refugees were traveling to Earth, following their escape from the Borg, transported on two ships, the SS Lakul and the SS Robert Fox, when they were caught in the Nexus energy ribbon near the Sol system. None of the El-Aurians wanted to leave the Nexus, despite it endangering and eventually destroying their transport ships. The USS Enterprise-B was able to rescue 47 of the refugees, including Guinan and Dr. Soran. The survivors were in a state of panicked confusion and had at least some minor injuries. In the Enterprise's sickbay, they were given medical assistance and assured that everything would be alright by Pavel Chekov and a group of journalists who served as a makeshift medical team (although the mission cost the life of James T. Kirk, or so it was thought). (Star Trek Generations)

The UFP may have Billions or Trillions of citizens, but they only have 47 known El-Aurian's that we know of.

Dr. Soran is dead, so that makes 46 left. That's assuming they all stayed within the UFP.

Then again, Guinan was originally around without being a refugee. While the sum total from "Q Who?" and ST:GEN may read as El-Aurians coming from really far away, this is no showstopper for them being in the UFP in some numbers at every timepoint, especially as "Time's Arrow" establishes a sort of wanderlust for at least some individuals.

I wonder if there's a telepathic aspect to their listerner gig. Or then it's just that proper listening is approximately as rare in the galaxy as El-Aurians are.
