Best/Worst/Most underrated Trek XI casting decision

Very few comic actors have taken on dramatic roles and embarrassed themselves; the reverse cannot be said.

You're right. Robin Williams, Will Smith, Jim Carrey, even Adam Sandler have taken on great dramatic roles.

Contrast this with say, Christopher Walken, known for his tough guy roles, who recently has been appearing in strange , some might say misguided, comic roles, like 'Wedding Crashers', 'Old School', 'Click' etc.

People,
Have some faith in our new Trek benefactors. They know what's best for us. It'll all work out in the end.
;)

This from a poster whose name is a derogatory nickname for the hero ship from the last thing to come from our benefactors. ;)

I prefer to remain neutral on casting choices until I see the movie but one casting choice that feels wrong is Leonard Nimoy. If old Spock is in the movie I'd prefer to see a complete break with the previous cast and have a different actor play that role. Once the movie comes out I might feel different, time will tell.

Best: Nimoy :p

Worst: Urban

Underrated: Pine

PS. Best, really: Quinto.
PPS. I really want to see exactly what sort of chemistry Pine and Quinto generate together. 'cos without some o' that, this movie is dead in the water; brill script or not... K & S and their chemistry is where it's at.

Oh, sweet irony. ;)

Worst: Simon Pegg as Scotty. I like Simon Pegg. But he's English, not Scottish.
This makes no sense. Doohan was Canadian, not Scottish. Shatner is Canadian, not American. Nichols and Koenig are American, not African and Russian.

It's called acting for a reason.

Worst: Nimoy, because it opened a pandora's box regarding the whole "bring back Shatner" thing that has resulted in a groundswell of bad blood against the movie and its producers, which Trek XI and Abrams cannot afford if they want to reintroduce the franchise.

Best: Right now I'd say Quinto because I called him as Spock the first time I saw him play Sylar.

Underrated: Pegg. A brilliant actor who I think will do well.

The rest are unknowns to me.

Cheers!

Ummm, for what it's worth... Koenig was the son of immigrant Russians, and Nichols is certainly African-American.

Doohan was Canadian, but the son of Protestant Irish immigrants, certainly Gaelic.

In those cases, I think it's clear that they could "draw upon" their backgrounds. Unless, you're stating that Nichols could have portrayed Scott, Doohan played Chekov, and Koenig Uhura... That would be acting.

Shatner's Anglo-Montrealer background is similar enough to US Midwestern to have been convincing. I'm sure though, he could have played Uhura though, just as well. That a Simon John Beckingham (Pegg) from Glos is portraying a Scotsman could be seen as a stretch, but then again, he did get married in Glasgow, and his wife's name Maureen McCann is rather Scots.

I think it's called casting for a reason? ;)

Best: Quinto
Worst: Kirk's dad. The actor is a gorramn SOAPIE star here in Australia. What's more, he's actually several years YOUNGER than Pine, who is playing his son. What's up with that? He might surprise us, though, so who knows?

Having seen Lost and MI:3, I'm guessing that Abrams' penchant for jumping around in time will come into play in this movie too and that Daddy Kirk will be seen in flashback scenes. And while I'm no fan of Aussie soaps, they did give Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce an early platform. This guy may not prove to be as good as either, but he might just do all right.

Yeah, here's to hoping Hemsworth ends up being at least a fraction as good as either of those two guys were. Crowe is OK, but Pearce is great.

It's been said Hemworth's audition just blew everyone away, so maybe he's the poor man's Quinto? Quinto was born to play Spock... could Hemsworth have been born to play... Kirk's dad? :vulcan:

I think Cho as Sulu is under-rated. I think he has more range than people give him credit for. I don't see Karl Urban working though, at all.

Yeah, I don't know squat about Pine either. If I've seen him in anything, I certainly don't remember him. He looks enough like a 30-ish Shatner to pass for a young Kirk, but I don't know if his voice and acting chops are up to snuff.

Bruce Greenwood is corny. The name itself is corny. Actually I think Cris Pine would have made a better Cris Pike as odd as that sounds. On the good side Anton Yelchin looks cool. I thought he was the Hobbit at first but then found him to be just interesting to look at. I wonder what his audition was - two words probably - Aye, Keptin. I still liked Mike Vogal better. Much better. A Captain has to be dynamic in atough as nails sort of way and do the flying kick with no problem, so not just fit but muscular. shatner's fat was often misinterpreted as musculature.

I'm still disappointed Ray Liotta didn't get asked to play Pike and accept the offer. He'd be THE perfect successor to Jeffrey Hunter in almost every respect.

"Worst: Simon Pegg as Scotty. I like Simon Pegg. But he's English, not Scottish."

James Doohan wasn't Scottish. He affected that accent for the role. :hint:

Before its mentioned: Yes, Cho is Korean, and Takai is Japanese. Mmm...no he's Hawaiian.

In short, I still see no evidence that Scotty will be the comic relief ie film clips.
