Best Star Trek author?

I'm no expert, having only read a few Trek novels, but I just picked up Star Trek: Section 31: Cloak by S. D. Perry from a 50 cent sale at the local library. It is by far the best Trek novel I have ever read. I feel like the characters are logical extensions of their on-screen personas. It's a great little mystery in itself, and the prose is excellent.

I look forward to scrounging around and reading as many books by this author as I can find.

From what I have read above, I'll also check out any book by David Mack, starting with the Destiny series.

If you're looking for more Jeffrey Lang books, I've read and loved the Left Hand of Destiny (which he co-wrote with General Martok himself JG Hertzler) duology, and Cohesion, the first book in the Voyager: String Theory trilogy. I haven't read it myself, but TNG: Immortal Coil is also supposed to be really, really good.

David Mack, but I have a certain bias there. But honestly, his read like a movie.

Dayton Ward/Kevin Gilmore for the work on Vanguard alone

The work Kristen Beyer did on the Voyager novels "Full Circle" and "Unworthy" was outstanding, it is what the show should have been.

KRAD is really good, and has a style all his own that is fun.

I like Peter David's New Frontier stuff a lot too.

The above are all "appointment reading" for me, when it comes out I make sure I get it.

I refuse to answer on the grounds that I might offend one or more of the writers who read this board, causing them to come after me with a gun, which in turn would require me to defend myself, and then, the world would have one less excellent Star Trek writer.;)

Ten years ago I probably would have said Peter David was my favorite. However, those Titan [EDIT: I meant New Frontier - Sorry!] books have grown increasingly more ridiculous. I just read David Mack's Destiny trilogy last year and was blown away by how good a Trek book could be. I'm tempted to go back and read the Vanguard series even though that time period isn't my favorite.

Who ever wrote the most recent Trek book I enjoyed. Currently: Christopher L. Bennett.
It wasn't "Over a Torrent Sea" was it? That might be the worst Trek book I have ever read.

Maybe it was just the story or how I can't get in to the Titan's characters.

Yes it was.

Different strokes, I guess. I really like Titan. As I've mentioned before, I dont follow the TNG books, I'm not a big Riker fan and TNG the show hasn't aged well, but for some reason Titan works for me.

David Mack, without a doubt. Michel A. Martin is one of my favorites also. Even if I'm still mad at him about Trill: Unjoined.

Just got two of C.L. Bennett's books btw. Torrent sea and shards of shadows. havent started to read them yet so i cant say if they're any good or not.
