Best sci-fi ever.

Of the 'high' sci-fi anime, I guess the more serious Gundam series seem to do well - the current one, Gundam 00, certainly has its merits.

Anime 'low' sci-fi, however, has only one winner - the amazing Planetes!

Based on a manga by Makoto Yukimura (which is even better than the anime) it details a very real-world take on the trials and issues facing the Earth sphere in the late 21st century...

...all from the viewpoint of a ragtag group aboard a flying garbage scow.

Its OP is very reminiscent of that for ENT, too! But without Russell Watson.

Science-fictional universes are hard to compare (or rate comparatively) because they are just that: different universes. I don't know about you, but my mind can't be tuned on much more than one at a time. If I chose a favourite, I'm sure there is something to which I wouldn't do justice.

Maybe I could say, French comic book series Valérian et Laureline (1967-today) (Its creator worked on The Fifth Element, which resembles one of the recent albums). Only Farscape (my favourite sci-fi show) vaguely resembles it.
Valérian was recently adapted in an anime series but that's just weak-japanim-like author-betraying bullshit for children.
