Best non-TV series books

A Stitch in Time by Andrew J. Robinson (Garak) is under the DS9 label, but much of it is set before and after the show. It's really the autobiography of Garak, written to Julian after he settles on Cardassia at the end of the series.

The Never-Ending Sacrifice
by Una McCormack, again under the DS9 label, is a beautiful odyssey following the life of a bitpart character, Rugal from 'Cardassians', up to and beyond the time period of the series. It's heartbreaking - Dr Zhivago-esque - concerning the way that societies can fail and how individuals can redeem them at a miniature level (a theme also present in Robinson's novel).

And an oddity is the Bajor: Fragments and Omens novella. Again under DS9 label, it's quite different - a domestic life and rainy season indie movie feel with a touch of 'what is this planet and its culture' conversation between first minister and her ex husband after joining the Federation (so still an indie movie! :D )...
