Best Movie Soundtrack Cues

I also grabbed a couple of songs from the Dr. Who soundtracks. HOLY CRAP who is Murray Gold? He's writing what has to be the best music on TV right now. His cue "This is Gallifrey: Our Childhood, Our Home" is maybe the finest piece of TV music I've heard in recent years.

My favourites from the DW soundtracks would be

The Girl In The Fireplace
The Daleks
The Cybermen
All The Strange Strange Creatures
The Doctor Forever
The Master Vainglorious
This is Gallifrey - Our Childhood Our Home
Voyage Of The Damned
The Greatest Story Never Told
The Dark And Endless Dalek Night

While Klaus Badelt was the sole credited composer, he and Zimmer wrote most of the first Pirates score. Quite a few other Zimmer robots (Nick Glennie-Smith, Steve Jablonsky, Ramin Djawadi and Blake Neely come to mind, although there may have been others) also wrote music for it. On the two sequels, Zimmer was the sole credited composer, although a few other guys (Glennie-Smith and Geoff Zanelli) contributed a lot, too.

I figured that Badelt must have worked closely with Zimmer on this, as Hans' fingerprints are all over it - and he did "overproduce" it. But you mention "robots" in reference to others Zimmer brought on board in the sequels. I take it you don't find their work original or creative?

One of my favourite movie soundtracks of the last 15 years is for the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" - the music really complements the film and adds to it immeasurably. My personal favourite cue is this montage set to "I'll Fly Away".

Oh yeah, and no discussion of great musical cues would be complete without Mark Knopfler's contribution to "Local Hero" and especially the ending.

If I'm understanding what you mean by a "cue" then saw one of my favorites last night during Episode II: Attack of the Clones". It comes after Annikin's mother dies in his arms. The sad and reflective melody slowly morphs into strings played with furious abandon, perfectly matching Annikin's roiling emotions just before he commits mass murder. Very effective.

I'm a bit shocked to read nobody else has reccomended soundtracks from the LEGENDARY Basil Poledouris. Who'se work includes: CONAN, ROBOCOP, STARSHIP TROOPERS, and ton's more movie's I can't remember right now.

In the movie "Dragon" when the actor who played Bruce Lee thinks his movie, "The Big Boss" flopped and he and his wife are trying to sneak out of the theater in China. The whole soundtrack is pretty good, but that part is the best.

Nope, never listened to Dire Straits but I'll check them out.

And I totally agree about Basil Poledouris. His score to Conan is probably his best work, but I love his score for Starship Troopers, and I also like his main themes for Quigley Down Under, Robocop, Iron Eagle, Red Dawn, and the Hunt for Red October.

There's lots of of stuff not mentioned in this thread- but given that the OP asked for stuff just out in the last couple of years, I don't think it's a lack of appreciation of them

But if we go beyond that I'd say (in no particular order):

Conan The Barbarian
Robocop
Dances With Wolves
Star Wars (series as a whole, but especially The Empire Strikes Back)
Superman The Movie
Tomorrow Never Dies
Casino Royale
Gladiator
Black Hawk Down
The Rock
Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy
Chicken Run
Star Trek - TMP
Star Trek VI
First Contact
Lord Of The Rings trilogy

"There it is! ..."

Followed by William's Jurassic Park theme as Hammond's helicopters flys through and descends onto the landing pad in Jurassic Park. Beautiful way to set up the island.
