Following on from a discussion in the Dollhouse reviews thread, where we were debating which of Whedon's TV shows took the least time to gel into a great show, I was thinking about which of his shows is my favourite. He hasn't really let me down yet. I loved all of his shows so far. Sadly, the most recent two, Firefly and Dollhouse, were shortlived and never got the chance to blossom into a multi season arc like his first two shows, Buffy and Angel.

I find it hard to pick a favourite. Firefly is one of the most original genre series in years. Buffy was a way of life for me back when it was on, and IMO produced some of the finest hours of not only genre TV, but any TV.

What say you?

Would be hard to pick, really, but probably Angel in terms of development. One has to wonder, how Dollhouse and Firefly could have been with time. I mean, Firefly to me was great from the start, but with fourteen episodes, all we really got was set up and arc start up. Buffy, the Vampire Slayer seems good, although I haven't seen a ton of those yet, but Angel just has something there...and I don't just mean Amy Acker, when I immerse myself into a marathon of Angel, especially the later seasons, it just...

That's not to say I love the others any less, for Dollhouse, I am gonna try to get myself back to work on the wiki and give it a facelift (the main page now needs some serious work), and some article re-writes and research, and I love the series to death and as I think of things and look at others perspectives, I see more arc and set ups and references then I previously noticed, but Angel still has something special.

As for why it takes so little to gel into a good show? Maybe it's the story, the writing, the dialogue, perhaps we tend to see the actors we love again and again. Maybe, it's Joss's uncanny ability to adapt as well, having been able to keep on trucking with Firefly and Dollhouse, despite studio interference and give a show many people love,

Buffy and Angel are #1 for me. After that Firefly and then Dollhouse. I do like all of them though.

As much as I love them all and consider myself a big time Browncoat, I have to go with Angel.

Firefly is the only one I've liked, and it is quite good.

Most of the characters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer I found incredibly annoying, and as a result I never got into the show. Since I didn't like Buffy I never watched Angel. Nothing I've heard or seen about Dollhouse motivates me to watch it, but I could change my mind eventually.

That could be argued, yes. Joss didn't actually write that many Angel episodes overall. But he did have a say as to how the arcs played out.

Buffy became more a Marti Noxon show in seasons six and seven, when Joss was developing Firefly, and Angel became a more Tim Minear show.

I think Buffy was probably the best show overall, it had the highest moments, but probably also some of the lowest. Angel was more consistent, but also slightly more average.

Firefly however, although it didn't have time to play out properly, it clearly had vast potential. I'd have to call it his best show because it did almost as good a job of establishing itself artistically in 14 episodes as his other shows did in years of broadcast. I have no doubt it would have been his best show. I think it had the strongest concept and the strongest cast too.

Dollhouse was OK, I watched and enjoyed the whole thing, but it never really felt like it had the right stuff.

In the following order for me: Buffy closely followed by Angel (I basically like them equally), Firefly then Dollhouse--though had Firefly gone on for a decent amount of time (3 or more seasons) I suspect it would be my favourite.

I'll go with Angel. I like it slightly better than Buffy, but I consider both shows classics. I'm also fond of Firefly (but not to the same degree).

Haven't seen Dollhouse.

Angel for me. Buffy was very good (despite a dodgy penultimate season) and obviously without BTFS there would have been no Angel. But just as DS9 built on TNG and improved on it (IMHO) I felt that Angel, also a darker series, built and improved on the Buffyverse.

Firefly probably would have been the best of the lot had it run to 5 seasons or more. However, great as its 13 episodes were, I don't think it's really fair to compare it with shows which had to maintain the quality for years, as oppose to months or weeks.

I like Dollhouse and am finally catching up on the 2nd half of the 2nd season but it's not in the same ballpark as the other Whedon shows.

Love Buffy, but overall I'd have to say I slightly prefer Angel.
So I'd say-
1. Angel
2. Buffy
3. Firefly
4. Dollhouse

Definitely ANGEL. It had a bad first season but everything after that was consistently excellent. BUFFY had some great seasons but also a lot of bad seasons. FIREFLY was interesting and all but it was only 13 episodes. DOLLHOUSE started off very bad and didn't get really good until the final batch of episodes.

My head is saying Firefly, but my heart is saying Buffy. It was a big part of my life. Any show which does 'Hush' or 'The Body' has to be recognised as a television classic.

I find it so hard to choose a favourite. The guy's shows are pretty consistently great.

I have to give the slight edge to Angel. I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I feel like that show peaked and then started to wane a bit during its last season. Angel never really did that. I also really liked Angel's darker tone and some of the ridiculously screwed up things that happened on that series. I like Firefly just fine but I think it's premature cancellation really mucked things up. Dollhouse was entirely too hit-or-miss, with a really interesting premise that was horribly executed and terribly paced (mostly due to Fox).

Firefly was the most consistently good. Yes, it was because there were only 13 chances to be good or bad, but there isn't one single episode I didn't enjoy in the, um, entire run of the series.

I loved Buffy to pieces, but the last two seasons were often painful.

I enjoyed Angel in the beginning, but I really didn't like the direction the last couple of seasons went.

I really liked Dollhouse, but I didn't think it was as overall satisfying as I think Firefly was.
