Best games for the atari 2600?

I played Asteroids pretty much nonstop on our 2600 when I was a kid. I remember that bizarre soundtrack playing endlessly in my head - just two deep notes alternating faster and faster until you were killed.

BEST. ATARI GAME. EVER!

My cousin had it... I must have thought it was lame cuz I hardly ever played it.

I wasn't being serious. ;) In fact, it's the exact opposite of the best Atari game ever. It is regarded by many to be not just the worst Atari game ever, but also one of the worst games ever made.

Pitfall and Pitfall 2, and Defender.

But there were a LOT of really good other ones, as mentioned in the thread.

Cheers,

My children and I must have owned about 70 Atari Games. My son and I have just gone through a list and have remembered 42 of them.

My favourites were

Superman
River Raid
Backgammon (this is how I learnt to play Backgammon, I especially liked the Acey Deucy version of the game)
Bowling (I once got a perfect 300 and left it on showing so that I could prove it to my son when he came home from school)

My son's favourites were

Skiing
Boxing
Hero
Frogger
Fast Food
Pressure Cooker
Space Invaders
Fire Fighter

There was another game that I liked - I remember one was on top of a building and at one stage black spiders came down on you. Anyone know what this game was.

There are so many good ones. We still dig the old dinosaur out now and then to play some games.

Someone's already mentioned Circus. Very simple game, but a lot of fun.

Now the great ones that haven't been touched on yet - Solar Fox, Vanguard, Phoenix

I still have mine, but it's in terrible shape and I doubt it would even work. The joysticks don't, for sure! When I get in the mood to take a stroll down memory lane, I use an emulator.

I forgot to mention this one: Star Raiders, an in-the-cockpit space shooter that came with a little keyboard you'd use to navigate through the galaxy. It also came with a little comic book called, IIRC, "Atari Force." I got that for Christmas one year (I was probably about 8) and played the hell out of the game.

My favorite was Vangard.

Others I loved:

Moon Patrol
Robot Tank
Keystone Capers
HERO
Seaquest
Star Wars: The Arcade Game

There was a game called "Circus" in which you controlled a see-saw with a pair of acrobats on it. The acrobats would try to pop a b unch of balloons at the top of the screen to earn points. The game was fun and addictive. But the highlight of it was when one of the clowns missed the see-saw on the way back to the ground the game would give an awful crunching noise - and you would see the guy flattened on the ground withlimbs weakly waving in the air - pretty gruesome death for an early atari game.

Crackpots

Yes, I believe that that is the game I was thinking of. It seems that the spiders came up to you not down on you.

I forgot to put Circus Atari in my favourites.

Talking about these old games has made me nostalgic. My son and I thought we might look into buying an old Atari console if we can find one at a reasonable price.

haha!

I always hated the loud static sound made when you died while playing Frogger. And the way the frog would get flattened into an X shape.:p

Talking of comics, what were those games that included booklets with a real, ongoing, arc-heavy comic series?

Oh, and my vote for the *weirdest* 2600 games: the SwordQuest series (EarthWorld, FireWorld, WaterWorld)

COMBAT! - Well, maybe not.

Defender

Megalomania or was it Megamania?

I played ET, one of cousin had it. That's the only video game in hell. You can either play that or watch Mrs. Doubtfire.

Not a thread topic you see everyday.

These are ones I can still remember:

  • Defender
  • Starmaster
  • Missile Command
  • Pitfall
  • River Raid
  • PacMan
  • Space Invaders
  • Berzerker
  • Pole Position
  • Grand Prix
  • Zaxxon
  • Spy Hunter

Allow me to testify, I have a particular love of the Activision series:

Frostbite - Awesome game. Jumping from ice block to ice block to build an igloo, evading polar bears, crabs and seagulls. Snapping up fish for bonus points.

Pressure Cooker - Far superior to Burgertime, not sure why that game became more popular. Simulation of a fast food kitchen where you must make the correct cheeseburger order and place it in the correct wrapping machine. My personal #1.

Frogs and Flies - You can imagine the structure of this dandy. Not sure if it actually was Activision or not.

does anyone know if there exists any sites that have screen grabs of the old games? Id love to go down memory lane & see what these looked like again. :)
